Hong Kong’s poor have long been unable to afford decent living spaces.
During a recent visit to Hong Kong, Chinese President Xi Jinping appeared to acknowledge the territory’s lack of affordable public housing, urging its new leader to make the issue a priority.
The Hong Kong government has pledged to build more than 300,000 homes in the next decade, something many residents say should have happened a long time ago.
Now, a new outbreak of COVID-19 is exposing that inequality.

They should move to nearby guangdong province, rent is cheaper there
I know china can help them.
Major cities are designed to suck value out of the lowest part of the pyramid and throw it to the top. I would much rather live on a farm and not even bother with money.
The housing shortage is the result of collusion between government and real estate developer, coz high house prices would guarantee benefit on both sides
Blade Runner got it right, the future is cramped & squalid.
These cage homes in HK have been around since the 1970s
There're lands for new housing, but some people don't like it. They want the project to be halt, they want the resource to be tight, and they want the price to be high. In the past the HK Gov were facing pressures from these capitalist. Hope the situation can be changed.
“Oggi capisco perché la mia generazione è vista come patetici vecchi che non sanno niente. Musei senza importanza e parola. L'eterno meccanismo di valorizzazione dei giovani per ragioni elettorali.
Per la giovane di oggi, siamo nati vecchi. Niente professioni, niente lezioni apprese negli anni, niente. Solo vecchio. Un museo che zoppica, pieno di dolore. E così si mantiene l'ignoranza.” From Adriana Leal, daughter of a polemic investigative journalist Manuel Leal, Itabuna-Brazil
Btw,why BBC news and my comment doesn’t appear on YouTube library?
Who owns all countries? Unbelievable. That is why I like Putin and my idol Prince Salman.
China needs to buiit homes for its people not to spend billions to colonize africa
Putting people in a cage? Nothing says dehumanizing of humanity like treating people like animals. This is morally mentally degrading. What crime did you commit in hong kong to be put in a cage? We were poor…better to live on the street than to locked away in a cage. At least you can see the sky and breathe fresh are. That would be more human than packed away and put into a dog cage. Never let your government treat you like a dog.
What ever happen to the Chinese Communist Workers Utopia they run Hong Kong now ?
Hmm! And am here complaining that my 2000 sq foot home in NC – US. Is small for 2 people.
In Hong Kong 300 to 400 sq ft is considered very big, house prices are very high, for a 500sq ft house, u can’t find a house for lower than US 1 million…
This is a real issue facing Hong Kong, not a made up one
My God this is a disgrace. People living like animals. In a filthy rich country
im afraid i cant help them just let them die…….. oligarchs and aristocrats dont care for losers.
Al Jazerra is western propaganda machine.. why don't you guy compare HK housing to US disgusting homelessness that make people around the world laughing???
Brings tears to my eyes just watching how such a thriving bustling and rich city can have people living in such conditions.
So they see their city is grossly overcrowded already, and yet they keep having 3 or more children… At what point does common sense kick in?
Coming to america very soon.
Love that social worker chick.
I'm actually rather impressed that in spite these squalid overly packed living conditions, they held out on covid cases for far longer than America. Even then when it happened, it was quickly quelled, and deaths are barely anything compared to America too!
