Hocking Hills Late Autumn Shadows Rose Hollow Waterfall 3-9

“The Hocking Hills State Park in Hocking County Ohio and the Old Man’s Cave Campground is, by and far, my most beautiful place on earth.”

About The Artist

This series is my very first attempt with this medium, not only with video editing but with filming video as well.

I have wanted to be a Photographer since I was very young but life chose a different profession for me. I still love photography but it has been a personal experience shared only with family and close friends. So, this also marks the first time I am putting something out there to the public that I created as an actual artistic package. I hope that you enjoy watching as much as I did filming them.

Late Autumn Shadows

In July and August, the sun is directly above and only casts the shadow of a single tree. In the late autumn, that angle is much smaller and the light has to fight through hundreds of trees to make it to the forest floor. This effect spotlighted beautiful little scenes that shined brightly ahead of the deep dark shadows. The bright sun-rays also brought out the beautiful details and colors of the “Black Hand Sandstone” rocks and cliffs.

“Hocking Hills Late Autumn Shadows” was filmed on December first and second of 2022. Join me as I explore the deep dark shadows and bring beautiful detail to those performing their little show in a late autumn sunbeam.

The majority of the shots in this series are all hand-held using a Sony FDR-AX43 auto everything except for exposure.

The Hocking Hills

The Hocking Hills region is 30 minutes south east of Columbus Ohio, outside of the city of Logan. The geology is made up of sandstone that has been carved-out by thousands of years of glacial run-off. The entire region is heavily forested with mighty Hemlocks that have been growing there, generation after generation, since the glaciers first dropped their first seeds.

This was my home away from home during summer-break from 1972 until I graduated high-school in 1986. I have spent many a day along and between every trail from Rose Hollow to the lodge and Old Man’s Cave, then back up to the campground and Rose Lake. When I can no longer explore, please bury me where I fell.

Rose Hollow

By age 10 or so, I began exploring beyond Rose Lake and found my own private “Hocking Hills”. It has everything of every park, right there in one compact view. Even on those days when the parks are filled to the rim, I can sit here and not see or hear another single person the whole day. Only the sounds of the water as it makes it down onto the rocks and into deep dark caverns of “slump rocks” and ancient hemlock dead-falls. Looking out through that valley is like looking back 10,000 years in the past. It wouldn’t surprise me in the least to have some old Adena potter come sit next to me and chat while out gathering clay.
