It was 6 times Simon… More than 6 times the number of losses in the Titanic mishap…
Really gut-wrenching if you go too deep diving into the details…
Horrendous…
And unimaginable of the same species to destroy so many of their own, women included… The ones who today stage protests for bird and animal rights…
Shameful… π
If only the boat was exclusively occupied by Nazis
You're pretty kewlz
All good except for Simon Whistler, canβt stand his trivialising every story he covers. Thumbs down..π€¨
that is NOT a ship disaster, that is a Warcrime, just one of the many committed on the side of the allies. no heroes in war
War is ugly.
Never heard of this story before. Thank you, Simon and team.
"But only the wind answered"
Such haunting words.
Thank you for honouring these victims.
But we always hear about the Titanic. So sick of the Titanic
This is not talked about much; I'm actually hearing this for the first time
Thank you, Simon. It is a story that needs to be told, and with the unwavering respect and attention to detail that you and your team have shown.
16:32 stuff like this just absolutely breaks me especially as a paramedic student because itβs a cold reminder that no amount of medical training or knowledge will ever prepare you to come up with an answer for a question like that in that type of situation. there are some things you just canβt fix and it fβing sucks so much.
aaaaand another amazing record for the best nation in the world at everything
Why is it spelt different on the side of the boat @8:25?
Indy and Felton, Raven's Eye, Plainly Difficult all study the Gustloff, Steuben and Goya. Now Simons turn.
Leave it to Simon to pronounce German names as badly as possible π
Not really a disaster, more of a soviet war crime
Then the next sinking was the Steuben. It was almost as bad.
12:25 much respect from here
My boi Simon looking so clean I thought this video was 3 years old.
Don't BLEEP with the Soviets… Unless your name is SIr Sean Connery…
I like how the blue light sets a somber stage for the story.
It's subtle but effective.
Anyone else read cook unity as cock unity?
There's a german semi fiction novella about the Gustloff, its sinking and its impact called "Im Krebsgang" (Crabwalk) by GΓΌnter Grass.
I was trying to wrap my head around how that many people would die in one maritime disaster with one ship. The ingredients answer that question. Wartime refugees in hostile waters that where treacherous navigate. With the ship that crammed, it makes a rather morbid sense.
it was a boat full of goddamn nazis… was it really a disaster?
what. the. fuck. fact boy… what the actual fuck
Super wonderful historical coverage video about ship rankings and civilian disastrous .thanks for sharing
Hi! I just want to mention another very similar similar disaster: the sinking of Armenia. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_hospital_ship_Armenia
It just so sad when those people behind the trigger of a gun stop seeing the humans at the other end of the barrel. May their souls rest in peace.
Iβve never hard this story. Brutal.
Why the fuck would you be so cruel as to torpedo a citizen ship? Even in war can we have some humanity.ππ
I bet that idiot, that suggested/order to light up the ship, is regretting that choice of his; and turning in his icy grave. π
After 4 years living bluewater I will never understand why some clowns build negative buoyancy ships, nor why innocent fools board them…
Can't imagine we ever surpass this total. There's virtually no reason to pack so many people on a ship anymore.
Advert until1:30ish, then story.
How very macabre… the add for my YouTube was for a family cruise
Did anyone else notice that Aelxander Marinesko looks alot like Brad Pitt in the movie Fury? Brad pitts acutely a soviet from WWII.
I always think it's funny when English words are just the same to German words, like "zeitgeist". I mean that sounds as german as it can get lol
does this guy own 80% of documentary channels? why is he the face of like 10 separate channels lmao
"It", not "she". Enough with this horrible, language destroying maritime "tradition".
My grandmother was a refugee who watched the Gustlof take off on that final voyage, having luckily just missed it herself.
East Prussia is still occupied by russia to this day.
The ship was not lit up like a chridtmastree. Under that condition it could have been indentified as a civilian transport. But it only had navigation lights. Otherwise good video. Every attept to frame that as "evil evil soviets" is nothing more than nazi propaganda.
I wouldnt call it a "disaster." Disaster implies an act of nature like an earthquake, hurricane, or iceberg. The sinking of the Gustov was an act of war not of God or an accident.
A state subsidized cruise ship for German workers to promote the working class. And people STILL say the Nazis weren't socialists, lol.
Technically itβs the single ship of losses. The RAF bombed 3 Red Cross ship holding concentration camp prisoners the day after the sinking. It was said burnt bodies washed up on shore for nearly a year.
When you started a video about 10,000 people dying with an ad about food. you should maybe realize you have sold out.
There are many cruel ways to die, but sitting in a confined space in a sinking ship has to amongst one of the worst ways to go. What a story.
