History of Mumbai in 50 seconds

The islands of Mumbai have been inhabited since the Stone Age. Over centuries, the area was home to numerous cultures and ethnicities, from Kolis and Aagri to Satavahanas and Kalachuris.

But Mumbai, as the city we know today, was founded in the 17th century, when the British East India Company gained control over the islands.

The British Empire had ambitious plans for Bombay; on their way to colonizing the Indian subcontinent, the city was supposed to be a significant port and a gateway to India.

For the next two hundred years, the Brits were building Bombay to be the most important city of the empire after London.

Although Bombay grew into a significant economic hub, it was also incredibly segregated. No wonder it became a strong base for the Indian independence movement in the 20th century.

Bombay, later renamed Mumbai, continued to grow into a major financial and economic center for India and the whole region.

  1. For those of you who haven’t been to Mumbai, nothing prepares you for the smell that hits you when the plane doors open, NOTHING! It’s a revelation! And doesn’t leave you for a month after you return!

  2. More prostitutes in Mumbai than anywhere and it really stinks! You should see the homeless children! They are everywhere, yet there are a few rich people who hate the poor! They give nothing to them. Shitty area!
