History of Fenrir Greyback: From Wizard to Werewolf – Harry Potter Explained

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we’re discussing notorious werewolf Fenrir Greyback- digging in to his past and uncovering some things that you may have never known.

Believe it or not, once upon a time, Fenrir Greyback was just a regular wizard. He didn’t have sharp teeth, long yellow nails, whiskers, or hair sprouting from every part of his body. He also didn’t transform in to a horrible, dangerous magical creature when a full moon filled the sky.

There is speculation out there pertaining to whether or not Greyback was ever a wizard at all. But as it happens, Rowling has confirmed that ONLY wizards are able to transform in to werewolves after being bitten by one, and that muggles simply die. This (if it wasn’t clear already) confirms the fact that Greyback was indeed a wizard.

In fact, though information on him is sparse, the available evidence would suggest that Greyback was perhaps even once a student at Hogwarts just like Harry, Ron and Hermione. This fact would explain his magical skills, his connections within the Death Eaters, and his hatred of ‘normal wizards’.

But on one fateful day, presumably after his wizarding education had finished, wizard Greyback (who likely was already of dubious morality) had an encounter with a werewolf where he was bitten.

At this moment Fenrir was infected with Lycanthropy by the un-named werewolf, a magical affliction that transforms witches and wizards in to werewolves. One who is infected with Lycanthropy is henceforth known as a ‘Lycanthrope’.

There are two ways to become a Lycanthrope, but regardless of HOW it is contracted, it is still considered to be a curse (for which there is no cure) that will completely alter the victims existence.

The first (and most common) way to contract Lycanthropy is through being bitten by a werewolf, though in some circumstances the bite can/will kill you. You must also be bitten by a werewolf in their wolfish form at the time of the full moon- ensuring that the werewolf’s saliva mingles with the victim’s blo*od.

  1. I was a little confused when you said that fenrir and draco convinced the shopkeeper to help bc I just read that part of the book and fenrir was not in that scene. Draco just threatened the shopkeeper that his family was close with fenrir and that they could convince fenrir to attack him

  2. Something I've never understood is if once the wizard transforms into a werewolf, he loses the sense of right and wrong and seemingly not remembering who his friends are (e,g., attacking friends in the Forbidden Forest), how could Greyback be in such control of who to attack in wolf form (e.g., seeking out Remus as a child)?

  3. The part where you talked about the trial that Greyback had for killing those kids, and Lupin’s dad’s outburst, were never mentioned in the books. All Lupin said was that his dad had offended Greyback and he bit Lupin as a result. Thanks for adding that tiny bit of lore to the story. I listen to books 3 and 6 all the time.

  5. This actually makes Greyback a kind of tragic character. Maybe he was once a good, kind man like Remus Lupin until he was bitten. Then once he was bitten he had an Arthur Fleck Joker style change, eventually getting sick of the discrimination and rejection he suffered due to something he couldn’t control and never chose, eventually developing misanthropy (hatred of humans) and accepting the monster fully but part of him still has the human desire for companionship which is why he wanted to turn as many humans as possible, creating a society where humans were the looked down upon minority.

  6. One thing I Never liked about the Wizaeding world is their lack of logic and common since were locking up the innocent while the guilty get away with their crimes and sins.
The unrepentant and guilty with such grievous crimes should be put to death as divine law demands but no they don't. For one many crimes against children is a death sentence. Just as murder is also a crime requiring the death penalty for which many today reject and forget about the victims and their families. And several of my relatives are murder victims and as a result of when they died and how old I am I will never get to meet or know them. Otherwise, I would have had the chance. Many were aunts and uncles to be more precise they're grand aunts and uncles as well as great aunts and uncles and our family lives into their 80s, 90s, and 100s. Or their deaths are the result of disease, accidents, and murder.

  7. Greyback had a wand in thw deathly hallows, why would people think he's not a wizard? I swear all these people that think this stuff or write "this is a plot hole" don't even read the books properly.

  8. One of my biggest issues with the Harry Potter series was the last battle and Harry and gang not killing their enemies. Call me evil if you want but I would have been like Molly and not have left an enemy who is TRYING TO KILL ME to keep doing it. Greyback needed to go, period. There should have been more parents there protecting their children.

  9. werewolves transform under the full moon. canon.
the full moon was already risen but remus didn't transform until the clouds moved aside and revealed it.
is it the light of the moon or it's relationship to the earth?
    asking for a friend.

  10. I would say that Greyback's hatred, especially of children, points to his transformation being done as a child…perhaps even as late as 10 or 11…right before going to Hogwarts. He would have been TAKEN after his parents were killed…and it would be easy to manipulate his feelings for OTHER school age wizards toward hate.
In his motives to warping young children into werewolves was likely reflective in how he was treated himself.

So, there's an evil werewolf…a father figure that's a murdering werewolf..that is behind Greyback's insanity.

  11. I've not read the books, so maybe this is addressed, but wouldn't a blood transfusion be the answer? If your blood has been infected with lycantheopy, wouldn't this be the perfect solution? You need new blood

  12. Okay considering that I have heard JK herself an interviews State the exact opposite as far as Muggles being able to be transformed into werewolves I'm going to take that part of it with a huge grain of salt, but as far as everything else with the video excellent work my dude

  13. Video idea for you to do:

What additional effects do spells have that are not seen in the movies? For instance, what else can the patronus charm do besides ward off dementors?

  14. I have a strange theory of my own what if grayback was the father of Lavender Brown because of the the scene and the part of the book where he bit Lavender Brown when she was attacked by grayback and she was killed here where my theory comes in what if he saw lavender dying and decided to save her by making her a werewolf because he had a secret child and that child was a girl named Lavender Brown??

  15. i think option 3 book version is that after greyback was left disabled in the battle of hogwarts, that someone likely killed him. He ruined countless lives on a level that any of the death eaters scarcely could even rivial. so it would not be hard to imagine that seeing him defenenceless during the battle that someone may have put an end to him once and for all to make sure this terrible man could never harm anyone ever again, whether that comes from a place of personal experiment with family or friends affected by his actions or a sense of justice. Also while stunned the chaos of the battle with the numerous beasts like arcomantula included he may have been killed by the falling of debries or perhaps a hungry young arcromantula that saw an easy meal. It would be fitting with the latter if greybacvk did meat his end at the hands of a hungry spider like he did to so many others.
