‘Historically illiterate’: Council considers scrapping Captain Cook statue

Sky News host Caleb Bond has slammed suggestions the sawed-down Captain Cook statue in St Kilda shouldn’t be rebuilt.

The sculpture located in Catani Gardens was sawn off from the ankles and vandalised, with the words “the colony will fall” written in what appeared to be red paint.

Councillors have planned to call for a community consultation on whether the statue should be reinstated in a motion at Wednesday’s council meeting.

“Captain Cook was dead nine years before the First Fleet arrived,” Mr Bond said.

“These people are just so historically illiterate and if we give them a single inch and say ‘well okay we are not going to put the statue up, it keeps getting targeted by vandals’, you are saying to vandals to cut down every statue in the country.”

  1. Councils have NO SAY in the matter.
The statue is Heritage listed: Victorian Heritage Register (VHR) Number H1805.
Heritage Victoria is the state agency that makes decisions about the most important historic heritage sites in Victoria.

  3. The ignorance of these people is breathtaking.
Captain Cook is considered one of the greatest navigators to have ever lived.
Captain Cook's primary orders were to plot the transit of Venus. This assisted in celestial navigation by confirming the size of the solar system.
Captain Cook's secondary orders, which he opened after plotting the transit of Venus from Tahiti, was to confirm if a "Great Southern Land" existed.
This "Great Southern Land" was "NOT" Australia.
The Europeans were already aware of the existence of Australia since the early 1600's. 170 odd years before Cook's voyage.
Cook confirmed that no "Great Southern Land" existed beside the antarctic polar cap to balance the globe. Yes that was a theory you morons.
I learnt this at school when I was 12.

  4. Captain cook represents many aspects of western culture and enlightenment. Courage. The quest to discover. Scientific achievement, curiosity about the world. The desire to be the best. What duty means. To be first. And, as one of the greatest sailors the world has seen he embodied these things. As opposed to his mean spirited and cowardly detractors who prove themselves unfit to stand in his shadow. God bless captain cook and all he stands for!

  5. Captain Cook was a great navigator and explorer , the numb brains who cut him down probably have yet to discover the earth is not flat. That's why they hate him for proving them wrong centuries before they were born.

  7. Captain Cook represents technology. The same technology that provided the Bunnings angle grinders these vandals used to cut his statue down.
I think the main issue here is the low Intelligence Quotient

  8. How many have been arrested for the vandalism, its total BS, this suits the narrative of the Labor Government, this wouldnt happen on my watch, every CCTV from Cook's statue and beyond would have been checked, no way these people just disappeared.

  9. In stead of destroying the statues , wherever they are, any "white" person saying that the "colony will fall" can start theme self by returning to their ancestral homes? Also, the indigenous people saying the same, can start living like their ancestors did before the colonization. It is an idiotic idea to return to what was before … What about Europe? What migration period should we return to? What about Africa? All bantu people should leave Southern and Eastern Africa … all Arabs should leave Northern Africa … all germanic tribes should leave Europe …

  10. They lefties who are not very bright and people who do stuff like this are just trying to destroy our history and culture to replace it with woke , makes my blood boil , you can’t change history and although these people may have done some questionable things they were the pioneers of their time who discovered or did fantastic things in that era and shouldn’t be forgotten .

  11. England. 'We would not raise a statue of Cook now'. We FINALLY have a statue of Harris, who's famous 'They will reap the whirlwind' after the deaths of thousands bombed in our cities gave us hope. Even then as it was unveiled some woke git had to be dragged away. Obviously, his parents were not blasted all over London. So, a statue does not need a time limit, in fact it's the opposite. There were many indigenous Australians who fought for Australia and New Zealand, I hope they are not forgotten.

  12. Agreed colonists should leave and take everything that they brought to Australia leaving the indigenous with what they had prior. This would basically be nothing but stone age tools and a life expectancy of about 35 years.
