  1. In regards to armour versus fire: depends a fair bit on the unit and what your facing. Thors and tanks, for example, recive next to nothing from +2 damage (i think upgrades on thors give +3 damage per shot, so thats a fire and a half). And if you're facing something like marauders (using armoured units) then armour will give you maximum damage reduction with quite a few stacks of it, whilst still reducing damage output of the marauders by a significant percentage. Its only stuff like marines, BCs, zerglings, and carrier's which will actually be reduced down to the minimum damage threshold (of i think 0.5). It is of course vice versa for the marauder player, armour does nothing to incoming damage, fire increases outgoing damage by a big percentage. Niche scenarios exist where extra damage on a heavy hitting unit is actually super good, as it reduces the number of shots needed to kill an enemy, and being ahead on armour can do the opposite for your opponent.

However, for the general case, damage will always beat armour. This is because damage will always increase the speed at which you kill the enemy, whilst armour only slows down the rate at which they kill you. And because a dead enemy can't shoot, killing faster also boosts survivability.
