Martial prowess doesn't give you +1 supporting attack to the one you already get with your thrusting spears. It allows you to use your spears better than others by allowing to make your spears supporting attacks also on your flanks and rear. Which is why, for instance, martial prowess is only for your spearmen and Phoenix guards. However I am curious to know whether you would have seen any battle report in which they would have played it the way you are describing it.
