The Day of the Lord (2 Peter 3:1-13)
Just as in Peterβs Day, the world still scoffs at the promise of Christβs return. In this message, Alistair Begg reviews Peterβs description of the Day of the Lord when all will be judged and the heavens and earth renewed. Scriptureβs focus isnβt on calculating when these events will occur. Instead, Christians are to prepare for Christβs return by living holy lives in light of what we know and by calling our friends and neighbors to faith in the Gospel. The Bible contains various references to hell, often describing it as a place of punishment or separation from God. Different Christian denominations may interpret these passages in various ways, but here are some key verses and themes related to hell in the Bible:
Matthew 25:41 (NIV):
βThen he will say to those on his left, βDepart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.'β
This verse is from Jesusβ teaching about the final judgment. It depicts hell as an eternal fire prepared for those who are separated from God.
Revelation 20:15 (NIV):
βAnyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.β
This passage is from the book of Revelation and describes the fate of those whose names are not in the βbook of life.β
Mark 9:43 (NIV):
βIf your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell, where the fire never goes out.β
Here, Jesus uses strong imagery to emphasize the seriousness of avoiding sinful behavior.
2 Thessalonians 1:9 (NIV):
βThey will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might.β
This verse speaks of those who will face punishment and be separated from Godβs presence.
Isaiah 66:24 (NIV):
βAnd they will go out and look on the dead bodies of those who rebelled against me; the worms that eat them will not die, the fire that burns them will not be quenched, and they will be loathsome to all mankind.β
This Old Testament passage uses vivid language to depict the consequences of rebellion against God.
Luke 16:19-31 (Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus):
This parable, told by Jesus, describes a rich man and a beggar named Lazarus. After death, the rich man goes to a place of torment while Lazarus is comforted by Abraham. It highlights the contrast between heaven and hell.
Itβs important to note that interpretations of hell vary among Christian traditions. Some view hell as a literal place of eternal punishment, while others see it as a symbolic representation of separation from God.
Prayer of Salvation
Dear Lord,
I admit that I am a sinner and have done many things that donβt please you. I have lived my life for myself only. I am sorry, and I repent. I ask you to forgive me.
I believe that you died on the cross for me, to save me. You did what I could not do for myself. I come to you now and ask you to take control of my life; I give it to you. From this day forward, help me to live every day for you and in a way that pleases you.
I love you, Lord, and I thank you that I will spend all eternity with you. Amen.
Sinnerβs Prayer for Children
Jesus β I know that you made me and want me to obey you with all my heart. I know I have disobeyed and wanted to be my own boss. I have thought and done things against your directions. For this I am sorry. I know that you gave up his life to save me from these sins and make me your child again. I accept your promises and ask you to please save me now and forever. Amen.
