C & P 2005 Kline, Majeri and Sage
Uploaded with permission from the artists
Headspace is the name of the puppet show created by Leyla Majeri (Yomul Yuk, Death Drive, Crack), Katherine Kline (Hyperprism, Dreamcatcher, The Powers), and Louisa Sage (Black Magic Woman, Clues, Drainolith). This album was the soundtrack accompanying the show. They all operated the puppets by hand and collaborated on the set design, costumes, props and backdrops.
The story and meaning of the puppet show is now mostly forgotten by the creators but here is what Kline remembers: “well, there was a storm, an origin story about colors, a worm/caterpillar, a crying Kleenex box, some fire…there was probably some narrative arc that made sense to us”, she wrote. Majeri added that eurythmy was also an influence on the show. From Wikipedia: “Eurythmy is an expressive movement art originated by Rudolf Steiner in conjunction with his wife, Marie, in the early 20th century. Primarily a performance art, it is also used in education, especially in Waldorf schools, and – as part of anthroposophic medicine – for claimed therapeutic purposes”. Colors was also important for Steiner: “The element of color is also emphasized both through the costuming, usually given characteristic colors for a piece or part and formed of long, loose fabrics that accentuate the movements rather than the bodily form, and through the lighting, which saturates the space and changes with the moods of the piece”.
The puppet show was first performed in the window of Mile-End antique and curiosity shop Monastiraki on Halloween eve, 2005. They did the performance two times, at 8 and 9pm. The poster designed by Leyla was screen printed on a small kraft paper candy bag and it’s shown in the video, even though it’s not part of the CD-R packaging. Second performance was at Sala Rossa for New Years Eve 2006.
