  1. This is amazing and SO entertaining!!! I am going to try and find the original broadcast online Right Now!!!! I just imagined it was like someone reading a book. This is so theatrical, I LOVE IT!!!!!!! Kind of like how we all have our "crazy family member" who believes everything on Facebook HAHAHAHA

  2. Orson Wells looked incredibly handsome. I asked my parents about this and they remembered it. My dad seemed to know more about it than my mom. He knew the name Orson Wells and H.G Welles.

  3. When you mentioned the Little Orphan Annie radio show, the first thing that popped into my mind was "BE SURE TO DRINK YOUR OVALTINE"! 😂

My kids and I always watch bits and pieces of A Christmas Story throughout the day/night on Christmas Eve since it's on for 24 hours. That movie playing in the background throughout the day is a staple of Christmas for us! 💚❤️ But before I start thinking too much about Christmas, I have to enjoy Harloween first! 🎃🖤🧡💀

  4. It really doesn't surprise me that a lot of people were fooled by the broadcast. Look at all the crazy things people believe today, even though we have the technology and the ability to research everything from our homes.

  5. This was amazing. I've heard of the event before and of course, of the hg wells book,(also love love love the Jeff Wayne musical version – recommend the original album with richard burton etc!!) !!! but this was a fantastic way to tell the full story…mixing the story of orson welles and the picture of the times… with excerpts of this historical event in theatre and radio. He was a genius. I share your secret crush….plus how awesome to do this amazing production then go to an all night rehearsal!! ….side note I so love how popular ventriloquists were.. on radio!!..that's so bizarre to me!!

  6. Incredible video, Stephanie! As a kid/teen I heard about this so many times – that when they broadcast War of the Worlds on the radio, people thought it was really happening. And every time I heard about it I was like, how bro? But I'd never actually heard the broadcast, and didn't realize that they created it specifically in the format of a realistic news broadcast. Even listening today, especially that part when the metal disc starts opening, is really terrifying. I can absolutely now understand why people thought it was real, especially given the context of the time period. What a brilliant piece of story-telling from Orson Welles. Wow.

  7. War of the Worlds is one of the only stories that legitimately scares the ever loving crap out of me, I am all about aliens and the unknown BUT this one is just terrifying. I had NO IDEA the history of it though! Thank you so much Stephanie for sharing this, and as always your story telling skills are absolutely impeccable! Orson Welles would be proud!

  8. I loved this video so much! I knew of the broadcast but I never knew that people believed it! You are such a good storyteller, I was on the edge of my seat the whole time!

  9. I smiled all through this episode. I love orson welles so so so much! From the first time I heard about this broadcast, to the first time listening to it, to going over it now with you… pure amazement! This man was brilliant and wonderful and what he pulled off here, even if it was unintentional 😂, was just utterly amazing. Ugh lol thank you, Stephanie, for this episode 🖤🧡🖤🧡 (I know I said variations of the word amaze a lot in this paragraph but that's how I feel lol)

  10. Sadly, I must admit that I am not all that familiar with Orson Welles. Listening to his voice and seeing some of his photos, he was giving me major Jack Black vibes (love him!). When you came to the part of his passing, I became overwhelmed with sadness, like losing a loved one.

  11. Ok wow Leonardo DiCaprio looks so much like Orsen Welles.
I hope he isn’t a “I only date women until they turn 25, despite growing aging myself” but honestly Leo D is not as good looking as the video of Orsen in the beginning when he was laughing”

  13. I have a terrible memory, seriously the part of the brain that converts short term to long term memories has been messed up from birth for me. I get called Dory a lot… that being said Orson Wells' War of the Worlds made an impression on me from a young age. In fourth grade I was lucky enough to get the best teacher at our elementary school. His name was Mr. Lutz and he played the broadcast for us. I loved every minute, I was enthralled and fascinated. I wished for so long to be able to hear more but it was the 90s so I would have a long wait. It didn't occur to me on my own, once the internet was a thing, to look for it. A few years ago, though, The war of the worlds broadcast came up in conversation with, I think my Dad. He also told me War of the worlds wasn't the first, or last, radio play and I was totally blown away. Mr Lutz had told us about how people freaked out etc etc and so I always just assumed it was something they were trying out the first time and it didn't continue. I started googling and listening to various mystery, horror and thriller broadcasts via podcasts and YouTube. I've been doing so for probably 8 yrs now. They're great for when I'm washing dishes or doing laundry. However, I didn't actually go back and listen to War of the worlds again until last October. What a show, even better than I remembered. I was hoping to ignite the same interest in my daughter but she was 7 and it freaked her out 😅 Anyway, what an interesting episode. All the embellishments the news papers went into are what Mr. Lutz taught us, I wonder if he ever learned that they were, in fact, embellishments. Thanks for the awesome episode ❤️

  14. I was homeschooled for a couple years as a kid. So, as a voracious reader, literature class was easy for my mum. She had me make a list of classic novels I wanted to read and she bought the school editions with discussion questions at the end of each chapter. For October, I wanted something spooky so we chose War of the Worlds. My grandma, who was in her late eighties and lived with us at the time, told us about this broadcast and how people freaked out about it! She didn’t hear the broadcast but remembered clipping some newspaper articles discussing the mass hysteria. She went though her scrapbooks from the 30s (she would have been 21 when the broadcast aired) and found them and I still have them somewhere. It was so cool to learn about that from my grandma as a kid. She passed away in 2008 and my mum passed in 2018 but thank you for making this video and reminding me both of them! ❤
ETA: Grandma totally believed what the newspapers where saying about the scale of the panic and chalked it up to Americans being gullible lol (we’re Canadian – no offence Americans! For the record I think we can be just as gullible!)
