Love the videos VTH keep up the good work
Oh, cool. Even though we are not involved in this story I am fairly certain that the footage at around 5:28 was taken in the Faroe Islands, whence I hail. Awesome. 🙂
Fantastic video and great reaction! And thus ended the life of Haraldr Harðráði.
I only know of this guy because of Civ 6 lol…the guy is always my bro and always allies with me as long as I have a big navy
Hey VTH if your still interested in the Anglo Saxon era I’ve been listening to a channel called the skaldic bard. He writes songs about historical people with their ancient language. Their is one about Alfred the great I think it would be interesting to see if you thought about.
OK, I’m surprised YouTube never recommended me this channel since I love history.
My guess is that Harald Hardrada´s dream in 1060s was to rebuild Canute the Great´s the North Sea Empire. I think he would have gone England earlier if given a proper chance.
1066 was the year England could have been ruled by a Norman or a Nordman
I've often wondered what would have happened if Harald had invaded England in 1067 or 1068.
Yea! part 2!
No East Anglia was a Kingdom apart from Mercia.
The river Derwent at Stamford Bridge runs between very high & steep banks, so that any bridge here would be very far above the water surface.
This would seem to make the story of the single warrior on the Bridge being speared from below very unlikely, so the tale is probably a fabrication.
Harold Godwinson might have done better to not have rushed into battle against William as far south as Hastings. He could have waited further north, maybe in London, compelling the Normans to come to them, where the English army could have been augmented, as some must have been lost in the march south from York. Harold probably decided to act swiftly before much of the 'Fyrd' deserted to help with the harvest, preferring the argument of strength in numbers, rather than waiting for the enemy to come to him. Meanwhile William was struggling with dissent in his ranks, as many were ready to return to France. Perhaps they were affected by Harold's victory, as he was, but for opposite reasons. His confidence led him to unlucky defeat, & death.
Dont mind me. Im just happy to be here and see my country(denmark) being releveant just once in history, beyond making legos, windmills and stories about mermaids.
Greed killed great men.
East Anglia was an independent kingdom just like Mercia
6:30 this is why it drives me crazy when people talk about "The End Times" as if its happening right now. We don't know anything about the true horrors of humanity. We are in the golden age in terms of human times. All we have to do is just not mess it up and we're sitting pretty.
Harald would certainly have tried to bring England back into his kingdom because he was trying to rebuild all of Cnut's North Sea Empire. And if he had had the additional forces of Denmark in his army, he would very likely have succeeded.
There is some dispute over the meaning of the name Hardrada, which seems to have been as likely (Anglo-Saxon Chronicles, John of Worcester, William of Malmesbury, et al.) to mean "Hair Beautiful" and he was, in fact, the real Harald Fairhair, not an earlier Norwegian monarch widely called that, but for whom no evidence can be found, but of course, later monarchs have never attempted to besmirch their predecessors, have they, Henry VII? They would also have exaggerated his bloodthirstiness in the same vein.
Can you react to the Evolution of the United States Army Uniform
My last name is Harkrader…family lore has it that we descended from this guy. I've traced some of my lines back 1000 years but stuck at my paternal name in the 1500s in an area on the Rhine. All of the other lore has proven correct but idk if it'll be possible to prove if we have any connection to this guy
Skardaborg= Scarborough.
Hi VTH! Love the vids and this one was awesome. Do you have any recommendations of literature regarding Harald?
Greetings from Sweden!
This is honestly one of my favorite historical YouTube videos, and I'm so glad you checked it out.
Constantine VIII seemingly was happy enough to remain the uninfluential 2nd emperor under his brother Basil II for decades in Constantinople. I bring it up because Harald Hardrada served as a commander of the Varangian Guard (which Basil II started) for years, only a decade after Basil II's death. So it's not unheard of for that sort of situation to work out pretty well for decades. Not every pair of brothers are Caracalla and Geta.
The Vikings tv series melds many of Haralds stories into the other characters
eg Bjorn and Ivar's storyline is heavily influenced by it.
I need an HBO Max series on this guy yesterday
Am I the only person who thinks the opening music sounds like Mongolian throat singing?
Both Godwinson's died with an arrow in the eye? What are the odds?
Finally got to watch part 1 & 2 today would be curious if you've ever seen the "trials series" from History Scope they're videos I discovered today randomly in my recommendations apparently he's done one for the Nuremberg Tokyo and Yugoslavian Trials? Would like to know your thoughts on this series if you haven't done it already
This motivates me to fire up CK3 in the 1066 start time and see if I can make history change as Harald Hardrada. lol
Off topic of the video but I saw this meme and had to share what it said because it made me think of you. It was a sign that said “Now entering Ohio, ask yourself what poor life choices led to this” 😂
Thank you for your channel. I am 55 and still learning more and more
Your channel has brought to my attention so many other great channels I haven’t heard of. These guys are now on my subscribe list. Thank you for sharing and adding your commentary as well. You represent the ideal reaction channel. Keep up the great work.
Hardrada deserves his own HBO series
If your into Metal, Amon Amarth has a song "The Berserker at Stamford Bridge"
Interesting video
VTH! you have to react to more danish and Scandinavian history videos even modern history videos the danish monarchy/royal family is probably the most famous outside of the British royal family and has just as large of a history as the British monarchy react to that type of content we’d love to see it, I would love to see it!
I know I've mentioned this before, EH's Viking Expansion is excellent. It's the hour long video. Check it out.
The only thing i dont like about the series Vikings Valhalla is that they have the timelines totally wrong, Knut who becomes ruler of England might have heard about Harald and vice versa but asfar as i know they never actually fought together, yet they do so in the series, also in the series Leif erikson becomes haralds best friend, yet Leif died in 1020 when harald was 5 years old.
The whole saga which leads to the battles of 1066 would make a fantastic quadrilogy. First 3 movies dedicated to the 3 main claimants to the throne which would then culminate and crescendo with the battles in 1066.
