Phil cmon “ sometimes I feel like screaming should have never left the live set” ??😂Gillan cannot sing those songs in more than 20 years mate seriously!? Plus that songs never translated live as good as the studio version, not even close by a mile.
You mentioned the album, and I played my favorite track off that, which is Jesus Christ Superstar album and the song Gethsemane (I only want to say). An amazing track off a brilliant album that showcases Ian's voice.
Thank you Phil for your fantastic 15! I will celebrate with some mind blowing tracks off of Gillan Mr Universe..Let’s start with Secret of the Dance,Puget Sound,Roller, Mr Universe,On the Rocks from Glory Road,Future Shock with If I sing softly and Lusitania Express..And lastly off Machine Head from Purple Space Truckin..Now let’s go and celebrate a fine artist..Thank you Ian and Happy Birthday
Phil you left “ Don’t hold me back “ from Toolbox!! What a vocal and feel. Remove Our lady for that lol
Glory road
Future shock
Magic
Mr universe
And anything Purple of course. Cheers
In addition I’d consider Bloodsucker, Fools, Highway Star, Woman From Tokyo, Driving Me Wild, Mad Elaine, Pudget Sound, Are You Sure, For Your Dreams, Bluesy Blue Sea, She Took My Breath Away, Via Miami, Before Time Began, Above and Beyond.
Great tribute and song pick, mine would be, not any order as all damn good really , Dirty Dog, Speed King, Gut Reaction, Hard Loving Man, Roller, On The Rocks, Zero The Hero, Bluesy Blue Sea, Born to Kill, No, No, No, Trashed, Perfect Strangers, Highway Star,, Mr Univers and of cause have to have Smoke on the Water.
Great compilation☺️ Great list. I totally agree on «Fighting man» as Number 1.
Call the Born Again remix Born Again Born Again. Ill get me coat!
Yes but it's the big one next year 80 !!!!!!!!!!!!!
New Orleans is my favourite 🤘😎😍
Gethsemane, mate.
Gillan almost 80 and still going strong…LEGEND
Demons Eye on Fireball one of his greatest performances
Born Again album is brilliant especially IG vocals
Interesting video..I'm a bit of an oddity in that I don't own a single DP album but I do have and love Born Again so that's my go to for Gillian sounds on his birthday, cheers
Hallo Phil, it's always great to celebrate the birthday of a still living artist that we love ❤🎤 Ian has been one of my favourite rock singers since I was a teenager, my very first concert was with Deep Purple in 1971, I was so impressed with their energy and Ian's voice and hearing "Child in time" live was much more mesmerising than on their album which I bought a few weeks before the concert, he is on my top 10 singer list with Byron, Marriott, Mike Harrison, Plant, Rogers etc. (Women are on a different list)
thanks for your thoughts and ranking which is difficult to do on so many projects and songs he did, but I always agree with the classic DP MK 2 albums 👍
my photo with the t-shirt I promised will follow this week ( I was ill a few days)
t's really good quality 😊

My favorite Gillan album is Toolbox 🤘
Nice touch Phil, top class as ever
I can't believe he's 79 already! Love him so much and hope he can perform for another decade or so!
Bleeding Obvious from =1 would be on my playlist! It's such a beautiful, heartfelt vocal performance.

Strange Kind of Woman. I met Ian Gillian just the once, it was at the studio of BBC Radio Nottingham when Ian visited to promote the Glory Road LP…he was a really generous gentleman with his time.
Great choice with Let it Slide by the Ian Gillan Band, incredibly atmospheric with excellent guitar, keyboards and of course Ian's peerless vocals,
Wonderful list, Phil…I was waiting for Fighting Man, I knew you hade to include it…Honourable mention for me would include 'Over The Hill', 'Born To Kill', 'Born Again' 'Clouds and Rain' 'Angel Manchenio' and #1, 'Gethsemane'…Your mention of One Eye To Morocco put me back to my music store days in 2008 in Toronto (Mississauga) when I met engineer/producer Nick Blagona who was scouting new gear at the time. I worked the recording department and Nick and I were talking up microphones and upcoming projects when he informed me that Ian and band would be in town recording the next day at Metalworks studios down the street. Long story short Nick invited me to drop by the studio for a visit; I meekly snuck in the studio doorway where the playback of the bed track for 'One Eye…' was playing out of the studio speakers…Huge, incredible rhythm track they has just recorded. Ian sat at a desk going over lyrics and Nick introduced us I pulled out my camera, met the band; bassist Rodney Appleby took our photo, guitarist Michael Lee Jackson was funny and delightful. So on a band break Mr.Gillan invited me to the studio lounge where we chatted briefly and then it happened.. the man himself…made ME a coffee!…I was invited to their local club gig that weekend where Jeff Healey (from my hometown) joined Ian and band on stage. A special time I'll never forget that I thought you would appreciate. And I did catch Gillan at a club show in Toronto on the Glory Road tour in 1980…another story. Cheers mate…you unearth so many memories for us.
Grand list, Phil. I probably wuda done 20 and added Born To Kill, Mr. Universe, Via Miami (from gillan/glover), Smooth Dancer & M.A.D. i also wuda axed Roller (great music but never cared for lyrics) and replaced it with Secret of the Dance. Cheers
I didn’t need a play list I had Ian Gillian singing to me on his birthday. I travelled to Texas and saw purple on Ian’s birthday as well as the night before. The band went into a bit of happy birthday during the encore. Quite good. Closest the band were coming and being they were the first rock band I followed since Maxine head what a great and well worth opportunity. Ian sounded great and loved Roger and Paicey either way so much energy. I must admit that I do quite miss Steve Morse. He had been with band so long I can’t help but miss his style a the band they were with him. Quite miss Jon Lord of course as well. No offense to anyone meant. In any case quite a joy to see Ian Gillian on his special day although he was quite shy about it being his day lol.
Wow, on my playlist today Mutually Assured Destruction and No Laughing in Heaven.
"Disturbing the Priest"-the best
Like many others leaving comments I have been a fan of IG since In Rock. Until yesterday I was not aware of Fighting Man, but am now. What a fantastic discovery, thanks to You Phil
