Hamburg’s Citizens Burnt Alive – War Against Humanity 071 – July 31, 1943

In Italy the Fascists fall from power in a peaceful coup, while in Germany the RAF and USAAF bring down a rain of fire of biblical proportions in Operation Gomorrah, launching the Firestorm of Hamburg.

  1. Lately, as the Allies increase their aerial campaign over Germany, and famine results from Allied nations’ policy in Iran and British policy in India, I (Spartacus) have taken more, and more flak from parts of the community. I’ve even been accused of being a Nazi apologist. For not acknowledging enough that the Allies were beyond reproach because in the end the Axis were worse, and the Allies defeated them. I’ve been told I should be ashamed of myself by reporting in such a way that there is a moral equivalence.

Needless to say I vehemently disagree. The nihilists among us might say that there was no good side in this war, only a less evil side. With that too I disagree. There was a good side in this war, it just doesn’t divide in sharp lines of national borders. The good side in this war was Humanity, and those who stood up without compromise for the values that later became enshrined in the Universal Declararion of Human Rights. They were present among all belligerents, but to a much larger degree among the political leaders and officers of the United Nations Alliance than the same group in the Axis Camp. You might even say, without being wrong, that for all practical purposes, goodness was altogether absent in Axis leadership.

When you add up the grand total of misery by war’s end by tallying how many dead each side caused through illegal, or at least immoral actions and policy, that is also quite clear. The Axis side caused tens of millions of dead that way, while the Allied “wrongful dead” toll is in single digit millions. But it’s still millions. When seen playing out like this week, by week it becomes clearer what that means. Moreover, in weeks like the ones we’re in right now it will by force be so that “the good side” caused more suffering in that given week. Right now the German Nazi mass murders are in a lull, and the Japanese are not busy with any of their horrific reprisal campaigns, while the Allies are causing more dead.

So if you dive into one of our War Against Humanity episodes in late July 1943, without knowing the rest of the series it might very well look like I’m on the wrong side of history. That’s both a strength and a weakness of our chronological format. The weakness is that you must look at all of it to get a clear picture of what the balance of good and evil is. The strength is that it exposes the effects as they were, showing us the transgressions of anyone and everyone. Thus, become the actors in this great drama what all humans are; complex beings of light and shade, with faults, and virtues alike. From that we can learn more than presenting them as cardboard figures of good and evil. By that we can learn both from their virtues and faults. What better way to remember them, and to honor them could there be?

  2. These videos are making me sick. For a few moments I liked the description of the destruction of the city. The sanity was regained when I remembered that you know Germans who are very nice people. One of them even originally from Hamburg. War makes people completely sick in the head

  3. you foreget the nazi leadership came 2 power in a similer fashion as did putin 17ooo germans were beheaded in police stations of the reich for not being loyal enough. it is a proven fakt that the majorety of germans did not vote 4 adolf when they still could. churcill started bombing german cities to provoke the german goverment 2 do the same. this was done 2 take the pressure of the RAF airfields , coventry was sacreficed . in the end of day it is a proven fact that carpet bombing dosent work . nor does atomic bombing work even if the americans dont get tired telling everybody that these bombs ended the war. i would much appreciate sticking 2 the facts . stop calling all germans nazis the majority were cauht in a trap from wich there was no escaping. the solution was bombing the civilians . how brainy was that .the allied leadership was just as wakki.

  4. Spartacus is ignorant of the most basic and obvious text of the Bible. Abraham prayed for the SALVATION of the cities of Sodom and Gemorrah. The text also never describes God sending angels to investigate if there are enough righteous people in the city. He made that up from whole cloth. He should stick to history and not venture outside his field of study.

  5. Youre a historian supposedly but don't even know the basic story of Abraham and his interaction with the Lord. Dude Abraham was asking God to SPARE the city because his nephew Lot along with his daughters, Abraham's nieces were in Sodom and the Lord said if there was even 10 righteous He would spare the city but there werent……. just wow. Historian, riiiiight. 🙄 simply had to actually read the story instead of spending so much time on your mustache and fake look.

  6. If the Allies hadn't carried out raids like this, the Nazis would have had no hesitation to continue bombing the UK as they had been doing for the previous 3 years.

  7. After hearing all the weeks of stories of nazi cruelty, i have zero sympathy for the bombing victims. That's the thing about war crimes, no one is avoiding them because of morality, they are avoiding them because they know if the other side can return the favor, they will. This is what they get for supporting a government who committs a terror bombing campaign.

  8. The strategic bombing of Germany does indeed seem to have been an indiscriminate slaughter of civilians with little military benefit. Or even if there was some degree of military benefit, it's still difficult to justify. It's not much covered in most histories of WW2 so thank you for your comprehensive work on this.
