The story follows a team of elite soldiers called Noble Team who are tasked with investigating a downed relay outpost on the planet Reach. They discover that the outpost was attacked by the local Insurrection, a group of rebels wanting independence from the United Nations Space Command (UNSC). However, they soon realize that the real threat is the Covenant, an alien race seeking to eradicate humanity. The team fights off waves of Covenant troops and attempts to rescue stranded UNSC troops, but ultimately fails to prevent the Covenant from invading Reach. The game ends with the planet being destroyed by the Covenant, with the only surviving member of Noble Team escaping to fight another day.
