Gunvein Shoot Em' Up Review! CAVE Bullet Hell Fans Rejoice!

Gunvein Shoot Em’ Up Review! CAVE Bullet Hell Fans Rejoice! I have been looking forward to this shmup all year and it has arrived! Gunvein is a danmaku bullet hell shoot em’ up (shmup) made by Boghog in association with NG Dev! If you are a fan of CAVE or Crimzon Clover World Explosion, this game is going to be what you are looking for. What I find particularly appealing is the aggressive level design and bullet patterns, the nice selection of difficulty modes, lots of practice and training options, and even some really unique modes like rogue-like mode which allows the player to customize the powerups they pick up and even ramp up the enemy spawn rates in radomized levels! Beyond this review, I also plan on going for my own 1cc of expert mode and doing a commentary on it 🙂 So if you are a fan of CAVE, Dodonpachi, Ketsui, Battle Garegga, Raizing, Touhou, Blue Revolver, and Zeroranger, or a fan of the shmup genre at all, I think this game is an essential purchase. Right now it is on PC/Steam, but I believe it is also coming to consoles in the future like Nintendo Switch, PS4/PS5, and Xbox!

  1. i really dont have a shmup brain, but after playing some sin & punishment, maybe that is the next game for me. shmups are hard, idk where im goin with this comment, its almost 4 am. This game looks fun, i bad at game
edit: i think it would be cool in shmups where your character has to leave their ship or vehicles and then its more like guwange, so that way i can see the anime girl in game and shoot em with a human sized gun or somethin

  2. A superb game, it just feels great to play. Shout out for the soundtrack, the music in this game is incredible, it really adds a huge amount to the game and is an area which often gets overlooked in reviews.

  3. Yo man, I watch your new videos always cool to check out new games that need more attention. I also liked your HARDEST SNES GAME?! Hagane No-Death 1cc w/ Commentary video and thought … why not make one similar for iconic games . I have been learning Battletoads on NES "the Hardest game on the nes" and thought of posting on here as a suggestion topic on here. GG once again my dude.

  4. Honestly i played everything playable in demo, and I wanted to like this game, but i did not. It has everything, but at the same time nothing to catch me. I spent few hours in demo, considered it good, and by the end of the day forgot it even existed until this review

  5. Ok, ill have to admit it, i only watched half of your review. Next thing i did was downloading the demo. 45 minutes later i bought the game. What a pleasent surprise this is! I think the art design is kinda bland, but the gameplay is amazing. Feels like Dodonpachi x Crimzon Clover.

  6. I mean I was gonna pick it up anyway, but this rogue mode REALLY piqued my interest! Parsec47 is still my favorite shmup, but most euroish shmups I find very underwhelming. Operation STEEL is the one I've played the most from this year, but it is a bit bland bullet pattern/level design wise, and underwhelming production-wise, but still has had me surprisingly hooked. Let's see if Gunvein can top it. 🙂

  7. In my opinion, rogue-likes are the biggest enemy of the game design. My fear is that there will be more and more rogue-like shmups that eventually will ruin the genre (which was miraculously resurrected just several years ago).

  8. Awesome game by BogHog! I LOVE the bullet patterns and stage 2 boss has my favorite ones to dodge.
Great comparison with SDOJ with the bullet patterns being similar. However unlike SDOJ, I can actually survive Gunvein lol. SDOJ is just evil to me lol

  9. I was going to pass on this one because the gameplay looked too advanced for me (I'm still working on my Crimzon Clover Novice 1cc), but hearing about how balanced made the Mild mode was a surprise! Guess I'm going to grab this as soon as it comes to consoles!

  10. Tutorials are 10/10 in this game and you'll get your money back before you even start the main game. Great review as always. I struggle with the lock mechanic that force you to release special and hit shot to actually release the missile load. I would expect a simple release of special would discharge? I might be all wrong about this but I found the button dance a bit disruptive to my focus.

  11. Just played this game. And even though on paper this seemed like it would be right up my alley, being filled with what I enjoy in these games, this one was just boring.

Most of the time while I was playing this game I just felt 😐 y'know? I don't even know how to explain it, ig the devs focused too much on how to make an objectively good game and that ironically made it a boring one.

Still, I guess the game is good (at least in theory it has a lot of good stuff going on) but for me it was a bunch of nothing after nothing. But hey, I liked the stage4 and boss theme so at least there's that.

  12. Great review! That's really interesting that the devs put a roque mode into the game AND I am surprised you kinda like it haha! I like to have the choice and the different options surely open up to make the game accessible to a bigger audience! You said the Roque elements here are not so random or they follow the shmup formula, can you explain this a bit?

  13. Great review. Its awesome when such a high quality, well thought out bullet hell shmup is released.Really like the continuation and stage choice being available.Reminds me of zero ranger accessibility wise. Also like the roguelite alot for exactly the reasons u mentioned here; its a refreshing alternative/ compliment to the arcade.Btw the graphics look really excellent on a big TV.Also for some reason boss 3 is the hardest boss of the whole game inho- those ships firing from behind are hell!.

  14. The game is amazing. Im glad that this kind of quality shmups get released from time to time. So we are not dependent of cave anymore lol. My impressions are similar to yours. Gameplay is really solid, really fun. I reaaally enjoyed the roguelike mode. A concept that in papers sound like an euroshmup thing is well implemented here. And about graphics and sound, I think too both are great but they feel kinda generic or not memorable. But in general is a must for shmups fans.
