The Russian army has pulled out in a hurry from areas it occupied to the west of Kyiv.
The BBC has gained access to places abandoned by Russian forces, shortly after their retreat, and has found evidence of atrocities, that could amount to war crimes.
One shocking incident took place on the E-40 highway, just west of the capital, with the shooting dead of civilians attempting to flee.
The BBC has also gained access to the nearby town of Irpin, which was heavily fought over but has now been abandoned by Russian forces.

War propaganda is always on both sides of any military conflict. Atrocities too, it is the nature and logic of war. Propaganda hides atrocities by it´s own military and emphasizes those committed by the opposite side. This is why Ukraine keeps Western journalists away from the front, but so does Russia. What is unacceptable, is a war tribunal in Den Haag that does everything to reveal Russian war crimes but turns a blind eye to what happened on the other side. The difference concerning the media in a autocracy and democracy, is the first is owned by the state and second are owned by economical powers, that own politicians, who run the country. The result is controlled narratives on both sides, not just in times of war.

What about the war crimes committed by Ukraine? There's evidence of them killing captured Russians instead of taking them as POWs. Show both sides!
The Russian army is committing many crimes against civilians in Ukraine. Among the most brutal are the mass rapes of women and, unbelievably, children. The scale ofwar crimes in this category is difficult to measure. Victims often do not talk about what they went through. But even now, it is clear from the testimonies of Ukrainian psychologists who are helping the war victims, that there are dozens of gang rapes on the Ukrainian territories which used to be temporarily occupied by the Russian military. This form of violence is particularly traumatic for survivors of abuse. The war must end so that no woman or child in another country experiences the horror which we now have in Ukraine. What’s more, every war criminal must be punished. In the age of information technology, it is possible to identify and find the culprits!
