Groundhog Day 2023: Wiarton Willie predicts early spring for Canada

It’s Groundhog Day, and as folklore goes, a groundhog will emerge from its burrow and if it does not see its shadow, then spring is just around the corner, while if it does and retreats, then we can expect six more weeks of winter.

In Wiarton, Ont., the community’s celebrity groundhog, Wiarton Willie, did appear from his burrow but “didn’t see his shadow” indicating an early spring according to Mayor Garry Michi.

Earlier in the morning, Nova Scotia’s most famous groundhog, Shubenacadie Sam, apparently saw her shadow as she emerged from a snow-covered enclosure at a wildlife park north of Halifax.

  1. I'm pretty sure the groundhog doesn't really want to be there. He looks pretty irritated by the fact he was disturbed from his burrow.
As well if you rely on a rodent to predict an early spring or six more weeks of winter you're probably putting to much faith in the groundhog.
Either way I'm pretty sure the ground hog really doesn't care if people want an early spring or six more weeks of winter.

  2. What
    is the most accurate groundhog?
Canadian meteorologist Cindy Day has estimated that Nova Scotia's "Shubenacadie Sam" has an accuracy rate of about 45%, compared to 25% for Wiarton Willy in Ontario. Part of the problem with pinning down an accuracy rate for the groundhog is that what constitutes an early spring is not clearly define

  3. Good grief, that was cringey. These people need to hire a proper speech writer, hire a costume department, hire a jazz or big band orchestra, and hire a producer with experience in tv/film. That was shockingly bad.
