Ground Zero Storm Surge Aftermath Hurricane Helene

Anna Maria Island is the barrier island between Bradenton, Fl and the Gulf of Mexico. Hurricane Helene passed as a category 3 hurricane with the East eyewall at an estimated 80 miles West of the Island. It delivered a significant storm surge that washed across the entire landmass of Anna Maria Island leaving damaged structures and destroyed vehicles in its wake. This video is footage from first entrance of Anna Maria Island the following day.

  1. Hey Ray, thanks for the video. We have been snow birding from VA for the past five years. The first three on AMI. Absolutely love it on the island. Just got too expensive. We now stay in Bradenton off of manatee ave on Fontana off of 59th street. We have been looking for news from that specific area. We are hoping that the property management co will provide some details. Do you have any local knowledge of how that area was affected? We appreciate your actions to help folks along the way. Sad to see all the damage. Did many folks ride the storm out on the island. We have seen many videos and it looks really bad. Hopefully not many deaths locally. Stay safe. Thanks,
    Gregg

  2. That looks so much like Navarre Beach after Hurricane Opal in 1995 and Hurricane Ivan in 2004. Complete devastation. I was a Firefighter during Opal and a Deputy Sheriff in 2004. Seeing the devastation never gets easy.

I had a before and after video from Ivan in 2004 from my patrol car's in-car video. Unfortunately that video was lost.

I appreciate all you do Ray. I hope all is well for you and your family- Rob, Pace, Florida

  3. We just had a similar problem in Poland. No hurricane, but huge floods that left a meter of mud behind. Entire cities were under water. A lot of destruction, houses, bridges, cars and, above all, human lives.

  5. Biggest concern here now for all affected areas will be the rebuild process, insurance claims and future insurance renewals. Estimated at 100 billion. I wondering if citizens has the money for those who are insured with them.

  6. Am glad you went to help since your able bodied and have many useful tools that help.
No one should be telling your or anyone else where they should be or not be! Your an adult and know the risk and choose to go help anyways. That’s very brave/noble/etc thing to do. And more humans need to act more humanly and show humanity and compassion! And help with whatever they can do. Whether it’s donating food/pet food/water/clothes or just going all out and traveling and helping rebuild or clean up!
