Got My Mind Set On You – The Beatles – 1963 Version [ A.I. Vocals Cover inspired by Beatles ‘64 ]

What if The Beatles covered James Ray’s “Got My Mind Set On You” back in 1963, a few decades before George would cover it on Cloud Nine? It seems like a song they would’ve thrown in their sets, and I remembered George requesting it to Murray The K in the original “First US Visit” documentary when they first got to the states. So earlier this year, I experimented with some tracks, but abandoned it before finishing it up.

Watching the great new Scorsese produced Beatles ‘64 documentary from director David Tedeschi this past Thanksgiving weekend on Disney+, there again was the footage of George listening to the original version of GMMSOY. So I pulled up the tracks from what I had started earlier this year, and with fresh ears, actually thought it was pretty fun and worth finishing. Also, I was able to find what I thought was a less robotic sounding A.I. George filter than what I originally used earlier in the year, which really helped pull the whole thing together. After laying in some more parts and singing some new vocal takes, I thought it was a fun enough experiment to share.

Let me know what you think in the comments! Does it sound more ‘63 or ‘64? Have I gone too Rutles with this one? (Though they’ve all been pretty Rutles, and frankly I take that as a total compliment).

I know a lot of people in the comments have been itching for a 60s Beatles version of “Free As A Bird,” and I think I might have finally cracked something that might be cool. In the meantime, I plan to do a full detailed, track-by-track breakdown of “Real Love” to really hear some of the vocals and string/orchestration parts, as well as a version with my own vocals, in the coming weeks. (And maybe a brand new cover version of that in the way I did an Oasis “Now And Then” version).

Send your ideas and requests in the comments and thanks as always for watching!

From George in Guitar World 1992:

“In 1963, the year before the Beatles first came to America, I took a trip to St. Louis to visit my sister, how was living there at the time. The whole Beatlemania thing had really begun in the U.K., and we’d had three or four hit singles. So while visiting my sister I went around to all the music shops looking for new singles and especially albums that were really hard to find in Liverpool. And that’s where I finally found the James Ray album [If You’re Gonna Make A Fool of Somebody]. There were a couple of good tracks on it, and one that I really liked was a song called ‘Got My Mind Set On You.’ It would have been great for the Beatles to cover, except it wasn’t really rock and roll; it was trying to rock, but it sounded like it was produced by somebody who was basically a jazz musician — it had all these squawky horns and stuff. But the song stuck in my mind.
Years later, in 1987, when I was working with Jeff Lynne on the Cloud Nine album, I finally decided to try and put more of a rock edge on the song. It came together very nicely as a rocker. In fact, it went all the way to No. 1 on the charts. And it only took 25 years.”

  1. Don’t forget to listen to the original James Ray version! George bought Ray’s album when visiting the USA to visit his sister in 1963. He even played with a group in Illinois a year before anyone knew or cared about The Beatles!

    ALL MY LOVINGを元ネタにしてる感じだけど、あれだって、あのタイム感と音色はジョージにしか出せないと思う。

  3. Stopped listening after 33 seconds because FAIL. Doesn't sound like the Beatles because (1) Lennon, McCartney, and George Martin wouldn't have recorded such a crappy song back then, (2) the bass guitar doesn't have an early 1960's tone — and (3) George Harrison's vocal melody is so UN-sixties. Sounds like a crappy band doing a poor job of imitating the Beatles.
