  1. this album was alright, i appreciate the overall style and aesthetic Damon and Jamie were going for with this project, but for me there were not outstanding or novel tracks on this record. almost all the features were pretty forgettable (save for Thundercat's) and a lot of the tracks were bland or thin. not their worst record but this feels like a total regression from the craft we saw on Song Machine Pt 1

  2. I remember hearing somewhere that Possession Island actually did start as a leftover demo for Damon's last solo album. It's a shame the track isn't great because honestly, the live version is lovely. So it's not like there was no potential.

Anyway yeah, 6/10 sounds reasonable. Good but not great.

  3. This band is a staple of mine but I do feel like Damon’s releasing too much music.. which is nothing to complain about. But I feel like the music has diminished in song writing. First 3 records were mysterious and had some great hits and deep cuts. Humanz and Song Machine had way to many tracks that it just didn’t make me care to revisit them tbh. Cracker Island sounds like more of the same with a few good jams but nothing that stands out like Feel Good or Melancholy Hill. The collabs also haven’t been as great in my opinion. Still love this band though.

  4. If each Gorillaz album was a condiment, this would be mayonnaise at best. You don't eat Mayo on it's own, you need to mix it in and blend it with other flavors to make something mediocre. This was my favorite band growing up and and each album l've experienced had it's own unique texture and flavor. But this was probably the most disappointing drop I've witnessed. As a fan, hoping we all didn't just witness this fall from Grace from the band and that this was just a very large bump in the road.

  5. Ngl this is easily their worst ablum
Album cover also looks like a fanart version of what the album cover could look like before the official one actually came out, did Jamie Hewlett actually make that shit?
Baby queen, skinny ape, new gold and cracker island are the only good songs, the rest aren't subpar they're just bad. Straight up.

  7. I can't agree with the opinion on new gold. That was a bad feature but at the same time the concept is in the name being "new" and not sounding like an actual Gorillaz song aka not being yourself but being in a cult following.

  8. I’m gonna be real, there will never be another Gorillaz, Demon Days and Plastic Beach… but I’m also at least super glad there will never be another The Fall.

  9. The thing that I hated the most was that now Gorillaz/s top song is Tormenta which has Bad Bunny in it… its always fucking bad bunny with his fucking mumble rapping… That shit dethroned Feel Good Inc. I have to say the first song was quite nice, but definetely not Gorillaz…

  10. This album was originally going to be Song Machine Season 2 with Tormenta and New Gold being recorded with that in mind instead of the Cracker Island theme, so that could be the reason why they sound a bit out of place

  11. I found the album a little bit disappointing for a Gorillaz-Album as well – Song Machine (Vol. I) seemed to pave the way for more cartoon antics in the future and even the Meanwhile EP has some flashes of color. I still really like many songs because they hit my personal synthpop-sentimentalities but it lacks "spunk" and the sad thing in enjoying these songs is, that as of now The Gorillaz is one of the only bands, that could have pulled off above mentioned cartoon antics and combine them with great pop music which created a fantastic tension and atmosphere on many songs on Demon Days, Plastic Beach and Song Machine, even in a few songs on Humanz and The Now Now.
Still loving many of this album to bits, but yes, I may be really that core group of Gorillaz-Fans spoken to by "Silent Running" like Antony says here, but I still hoped it would've widen the horizon a little bit.

  12. not a one thing I would say different. I really was just whelmed by this.

The Tame impala track being essentially not a Gorillaz song also is how i feel about it.

6/10 isn't harsh its just honest.

  13. Gorillaz trying but not accomplishing to seed something in reggeaton sound is sad. It could've been something to hear. Same with Skinny Ape. It feels like they saying "we can sound like this too" and that is not why I hear Gorillaz at all.
