Gordon "Whipped Peter" | The TRUE Story | Emancipation

Gordon or also known as “Whipped Peter” was a African slave in America who escaped during his enslavement and became the subject of photographs documenting the extensive scarring of his back from whippings.

There are many uncertainties of his real full name, but enslaved people weren’t rendered important enough to be given a last name, so his name was just Gordon, but even so he was called Peter because of the stubbornness of the slave owners to acknowledge the name given to him by his mother.

The “scourged back” photo became one of the most widely circulated photos of the abolitionist movement during the American Civil War and remains one of the most infamous photographs of that era.

  1. Anthropologists in the far future (probably human-AI hybrids) will look back upon that time (and this one as well) the way current anthropologists and archaeologists do the Romans, the Greeks, the Egyptians, the Sumerians, and pre-historical hominids.
We are still much, much closer to our "primitive" ancestors than we are to what we lie to ourselves as being: "Civilized."
Humanity still needs thousands of years to evolve out of our very present problems with tribalism and selfishness.
That, of course, is if we survive as a species at all!
What will kill us off? The competition is between the planet's becoming uninhabitable and the advent of world-ending A.I.–not to mention the disintegration of the Y chromosome or the advent of genetic manipulation that could homogenize us into oblivion.
And for those who believe in Zeus and his Olympian gods, there is always the prospect–for them–that Zeus will send us all to Hades. Or maybe it will be Shiva, the Hindu god of death?
What a funny bunch of self-important apes we all are. Where's the asteroid already!?
