After the excitement of last session Gryfflet has calmed himself to the point where his only real worry is that his clothes are not sufficiently natty. He consoles himself that he is within reach of Osgiliath at long last and sets out on what is hopefully the last stage of his journey. He is amused that his last remaining task is to bury more caches for some later adventurer to recover and gratified at the relative ease with which this is accomplished. Now free to seek Faramir’s last known location, he sets off across country while we contemplate a Lore Question. We pause when the first place we try turns out to be infested with Orcs but they pose little threat to our Burglar who scans the surrounding countryside and spots another camp which bears investigation. After a brief delay occasioned by our distracting Lore discussion he moves in to wreak his usual havoc, pausing only slightly to critique the architecture before routing the camp leaders, Muzgásh and Dagron, who take the unusual step of running away. Clutching his collection of troll teeth he reports his encounter at Faramir’s Lookout where he is unsurprised not to find the man himself. Having warned the occupants of the dangers posed by stealthy Mûmakil he visits the nearby ruins to investigate possible arcane activity. He discovers and deals with an infestation of corrupted water spirits from the nearby Morgulduin, and is overjoyed to discover that this is sufficiently worrisome to justify his immediate departure for Osgiliath. He sets off up the road to the Cross-roads where we are gratified to find the expected statuary, visits the entrance to the Morgul Vale, then scouts the approach to Osgiliath which is blocked by the enemy. His excitement at encountering an actual stealth Mûmak lasts all the way back to the Lookout where he is told of a secret way into the city, so he tries again and this time gets all the way to the culverts under the city where yet again Faramir is nowhere to be seen. We are greeted by Mablung and Damrod, well-known from the book, who have the usual list of tasks for us to undertake within the city. Gryfflet commences his exploration of the city and manages to find one of Mablung’s men in a suitable spot for him to await the next session.
“…and so the cycle of life continues!”
“Hark! A ruin!”
“I feel like a lumberjack planting trees!”
“All right, time for some dentistry!”
“Let’s take this seriously!”
“All right, we’ll come in again!”
“Quick, take advantage of the opportunity to destroy statues while I’m on fire!”
“Mûmakil can be really stealthy indeed, let me tell you!”
“There’s the King’s head with his crown!”
“Would you make up your mind if you’re fighting me or not?”
“Wasn’t that sack mysterious? Totally not just me!”
Lore discussed this week included JRRT’s original plan for Bilbo’s “magic ring”.
