Gold Mafia – Episode 2 – Smoke & Mirrors | Al Jazeera Investigations

South Africa’s most notorious money launderer is known as Mo Dollars. He cleans millions of dollars from the sale of illicit cigarettes through gold. Confidential documents expose an intricate web of shelf companies and fake invoices that hide a multi-million-dollar operation in plain sight.

When the Gold Mafia’s money laundering business outgrows its existing infrastructure, it takes over banks and government departments. Ledgers reveal the names of bank, immigration, and customs officers, and a central bank governor – all recipients of the mafia’s generous bribes.

Undercover reporters strike a deal with a competing mafia, one that’s close to the Zimbabwean government. It promises to launder $1.2 billion of dirty cash and guarantees access to executive power.

Gold Mafia, a four-part series by Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit looks at how society’s obsession with gold underwrites a global shadow economy. The undercover team infiltrates the rival gangs that turn dirty cash into gold, which is then sold around the world. Through exclusive interviews with whistleblowers from within the criminal syndicates, investigators obtain the blueprints of the money laundering operations that service southern Africa’s economic and political elite. And the investigation leads to the highest offices of state.

  1. The boldness he has to issue such a statement β€œAs long as you grease the wheels in Africa, there’s no issue” sad

How can we join hands with foreigners to destroy our continent in the name of money. What did we do wrong as Africans? 😒😞

  3. But what is the deep purpose of such a documentary? If it is to bring collapse in Zimbabwe… make sure God will turn it back to you in Jesus name! When our leaders are a bit honest you find ways to overthrow them when they dishonest you are also there to bring disorder in Africa! Let God see and judge !

  4. I'm really confused at one thing; The production of this documentary.

    1. How are they filming all the scenes from multiple angles of cameras? (Remember the mafias have confiscated their phones)

    2. What kind of device are they using to capture the sound that is giving this level of sound quality that is coming from the mafias they are investigating? It's clear than boom mics used in most of the hollywood films.

  6. We commend the efforts of those who conducted the undercover investigations, although we don't know the motive behind the investigatons or who the beneficiaries of the investigatons could be. It must be indicated that doing an undercover documentary is not the issue. The main issue is whether these kind of activities can ever be stopped or prevented in African countries. Yes, they have uncovered few of the gold, tobacco, and cigarette ilegal transactions in Zimbabwe and South Africa. What about other African countries? What about ilegal activities on other products and natural resources? The sad truth is that, most wealthy people or even countries in the world, all engage in ilicit activities in Africa which generate their ill gotten money. It could be their ilegal proliferation of arms (arms deal) blood diamond, drug trafficking, oil and gas etc. The question is who can stop them? All we can say is, May God save Africa.
