  1. I really appreciate Grubb's perspective on the Bayo issue, with emphasis on the conditions and developments that may compel someone to lie, and how the focus on the narrative procedure on finding "culprits" adeptly sidesteps addressing structural failures in the industry. Even the framing of the search for truth can be a matter of capital and labor struggles

  2. I never played it back then so maybe its a time thing, but I just played through Uncharted 4 on this new release and I would at most give it a 5/10. I can't believe how good the reviews are going back, the game was a horrible slog in basically the last half, the story falls apart, they just force hours of climbing and shooting for no real reason. That last boss fight is the worst one I've done in 10+ years! How many bridges can break when you walk on them and you had no idea and yell with surprise? How many sliding hills do you need to fall down to catch another ledge? It just feels like they dragged it out as an excuse to call it a AAA game, and had to make up stuff to do and story that made no sense to flesh it out.

  3. releasing uncharted 4, without releasing 1, 2, and 3 on the PC is such a huge showing of ego. "there's no way you didn't have a PS3/4 and played through these already. you can't possibly NOT own one of our consoles, so you dont need 1/2/3"

  4. It's pretty difficult to just compare US salaries to the USD equivalent of Japanese salaries and say that they're too low. I have no idea what the cost of living looks like in Japan, but I understand that they've got a better grip on healthcare and housing costs than we do. It would make it harder to get a true apples to apples.

  5. As a huge Uncharted fan, those numbers are kinda depressing. I replayed 4 on pc, and the fps increase is a huge difference. One of the funnest 3rd person shooters ever

  6. Hellena Taylor wanted to boycott a game on the basis of a lie she told. That hundreds of people spent YEARS on creating principly because she wasn't satisfied with the monetary compensation.

That's not a defensible position in any way shape or form.

  7. Re: Pay for Japanese game devs. It's the same in Anime, animators and artists are massively overworked and massively underpaid and burn out fast. Basically if you have anything to do with creating animated art in Japan you're treated very badly.

  8. 11:00 Being offered 15k to do a couple of weeks(?) work seems great to me. Its more than I make in a year of part time labor. Her lying about the facts here deserves to be focus of this story.

If the broader conversation of voice acting wages industry wide is also an issue than I'm happy to entertain that discussion but in this case she was offered something that goes well above the expected wage of someone in her profession. Its clear Nintendo didn't truly want her for this project so as a professional they gave her an offer rather than flat out decline her services. Then they moved on to someone they actually wanted for the role and almost certainly gave them a better offer.

Being 'low balled' is very different from making claims that pay rates are unfair for the work involved. If we want to take this issue seriously then at least bring it up with actual examples of unfair pay rates for voice acting.

As for the generic argument of 'well this game is going to earn 100 millions so you need to pay people more' I think this is a very silly way to look at things. Games are a massive investment and present massive risk. Every year we dunk on a dozen AAA games that completely bomb but still cost these companies millions to deliver. On top of that these are often publicly traded companies…so saying they made 500 million in profits is not a compelling reason for increasing wages if that 'profit' doesn't exceed prior performance. That's why us normies invest in the markets after all…not to see our money shrink but to see it grow long term since these companies continue to profit more this year than last year.

Please don't read this post as I fully agree with everything mega corporations do and this industry is perfect. I don't know enough about voice acting and video games. I'm simply trying to present a side of this story that hasn't even been discussed by GB at all during this whole ordeal and honestly should have.

  9. I can't believe these hosts are defending that Bayonetta actress.

    She lied, period.

Making 15k dollars for a weeks worth of TALKING INTO A MICROPHONE…

The laptop class is so out of touch with how things work in the real world, good god.

  10. Best part of the podcast…

Hearing Jeff try not to say He Who Shall Not Be Named (Colin Moriarty) even though he's arguably one of the most well known gaming personalities / media in the west.

Such awkward fumbling around when he brought up Sacred Symbols, lol
