Global National: April 9, 2023 | Israeli-Palestinian tensions heightened over religious weekend

As Easter, Passover and Ramadan coincided together this year, prayers for peace between Israel and Gaza were nowhere near answered, with tensions remaining high all weekend. As Touria Izri reports, that’s on top of Israel’s growing political turmoil from within.

Tensions grew as China’s military simulated precision strikes against Taiwan with a second day of drills around the island. Beijing called it a “stern warning” after Taiwan’s president visited the U.S. As Redmond Shannon reports, drills are expected to continue until Monday, as fears of a much larger conflict loom.

In Canada, Hydro-Quebec says it hopes to reconnect power to the over 100,000 customers left without electricity since last week’s ice storm by Monday. But with clean-up efforts still in full force, some outages will not be resolved before Tuesday. Elizabeth Zogalis reports.

In Alberta, the province is now just a few weeks away from an election, and the governing United Conservatives are trying to make their case for staying in power by focusing its attention on crime. But will these political promises make cities safer? Heather Yourex-West takes a look.

It was an historic week in the U.S. that saw former president Donald Trump pleading not guilty to 34 felonies, while a vote to flip a conservative seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court could upend state laws on everything from voting to abortion rights. As Eric Sorensen reports, while Trump still commands much of the spotlight, support may be shrinking for Republicans and Democrats are taking advantage.

Baseball is finally back in Toronto this week, with changes to both the game and new renovations for the Rogers Centre. Mike Drolet talks about it with former Jays manager John Gibbons, a big character in his own right.

  1. The minuscule pay increases are only in the private sector. Government employees continue to receive fully indexed gold lined pensions and increases in pay that match or exceed inflation. The people paying for those overly generous salaries and pensions are the struggling private sector workers

  2. Taiwan's former president, Ma Ying-jeou, just wants to build a good relationship with China in order to avoid serious conflicts between China and Taiwan. He received his PhD from Harvard Law School and has always maintained a great relationship with the United States. (By the way, all of his 4 sisters live in the States and his daughter is married to a Chinese American. ) What you reported in the news is incorrect. Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party(Min Jin Dang) is known for slandering Mr. Ma's reputation.

  4. Also, I would like to let you know that people in Taiwan are quite at ease even though China is doing military drill near Taiwan because the ruling party DPP led by Ms. Tsai Ing-wen has never revealed to the people what has really happened about China's military drill. Moreover, there is serious corruption in the government, and Ms. Tsai has turned a blind eye to it.

  5. Religion. It rhymes it’s word’s about love but always divides. The greatest example of that is the Middle East, it is the most religious area on earth and the most war torn. Humanity needs to evolve past these primitive ignorant ideologies that are in contradiction to scientific facts and cause good people to do evil things.

Mr. Ma has been persecuted by the Democratic Progressive Party with countless lawsuits against him, but so far, he has won all the lawsuits.

  7. Two mistakes had happened that has brought upside-downs to the Israeli Nation. The Roman Empire did violated biblical and Quranic promises on Israeli Holy-Land ownership to a created project called SYRIA-PALESTINA which had further brought disasters under the Ottoman Empire to maximum confusions. Then the British had complicated furthermore after the end of the 2nd world-war. All nations of the world have their constitutions changed under president's directives. All religious scholars do agree that holy-books cannot be changed forlife and should stick to holy-books quotes about holy-land real genuine-owners whom are the good people of the mighty nation of ISRAEL. SHARE this message to install GLOBAL-PEACE for the whole WORLD and save lives. God bless the great nation of ISRAEL.

  8. All these anti life people keep saying a woman should have the right to control her own body. Well that's exactly why abortion is wrong. You have the right to control your OWN body, not someone else's. And killing someone before they are born is the most extreme way to control someone else's body.

  10. Pelastinians are such hypocrites. Palestine took Afrin city few years back in Rojava (Syrian Occupied Kurdistan). There are multiple Arab, Persian, Turkish countries in the region. I don't see why rhe Arabs are against one Kurdistan. 🤔
Also Jews were originally from Jerusalem but Mongols weren't from Turkey and they took Kurdish land. France and England seperated Kurdistan into 4 parts after the world War 1. They have every ethnicity int he region a country and left out 85 million Kurds with no country. Arabs still don't recognize Kurdish genocides like Anafal and manyany more.

  11. If America stopped financing Israel, the Israel-Palestine conflict would end very quick. American citizens should become more and more pushy towards their government to stop using their taxes to finance Zionism. The whole world should push America to stop financing Israel.
