Gladiator II – Hollywood, History & Archaeologists as Film Critics!

Welcome to Unstratified Entertainment: Watching Brief. In this supplementary series, Marc (Mr Soup) & Andy Brockman of the Pipeline (Where history is tomorrow’s news) cast an eye over topical media and entertainment and discuss and debate what they find.

Today we examine Archaeology’s relationship with cinema. Do archaeologists make good film critics? Does Hollywood have a responsibility to portray the past ‘accurately’?

  1. For an American example, I've never particularly wanted to see Kevin Costner's "Wyatt Earp, " but I've seen "Tombstone" probably a dozen times. I'm sure that Val Kilmer's Doc Holliday is totally inaccurate, but he's one of the best scoundrels ever. And thanks to him, I now know what a huckleberry is.
