From the creator of Pony Island and The Hex comes the latest mind melting, self-destructing love letter to video games. Inscryption is an inky black card-based odyssey that blends the deckbuilding roguelike, escape-room style puzzles, and psychological horror into a blood-laced smoothie. Darker still are the secrets inscrybed upon the cards…
In Inscryption you will…

Acquire a deck of woodland creature cards by draft, surgery, and self mutilation
Unlock the secrets lurking behind the walls of Leshy’s cabin
Embark on an unexpected and deeply disturbing odyssey

  1. "Is it story-significant or is this just a challenge mode?" – kinda both. It has unlockable challenges (which you can combine making something absurdly difficult) and additional content like new cards or items or events. A bit of lore thrown into it as well when you unlock more and more stuff, tho it is not really a continuation, I believe. I'd say you should try it out, tho it would be understandable if you decided that it is not worth your recording space.

  2. kaycee's mod is a challenging mode, but there is a little of history about kaycee and the inscryption thing (in notes, like a diary, not cutscenes) , and adds new cards to the game, so maybe you can check it out in your own free time. and make a few broken decks.

  3. What I do really like about the game is how many secrets there are to discover, despite it not being not very long. You actually missed an entire secret boss with unique mechanics and didn't learn all the lore from the trader, for example. Even small stuff like how during the Archivist boss fight, when you select a picture file, P03 actually puts it on his monitor head. I chose my profile picture when asked for an old file and suddenly had to fight myself!
Inscrytion is a very neat game with a bunch of cool concepts, which makes it worth the experience, even if the execution is sometimes lackluster.

  4. Now you might see why this game is one of my favorites, while it has some negatives, even if you aren't into the arg stuff the basic story and the characters creates a strangely emotional ending with an incredibly good card game. There is only one ending other than extra scenes missing but the Luke carder part is mostly for the extra story and arg aspects entirely, but the game is entirely made so you can ignore it and enjoy the game. Kaycee's mod is mostly a challenge mode that tells the story of what Kaylee was doing before she died, mostly related to the meta story

  5. Inscryption is a game done by Daniel Mullins Games, which have also created other games like Pony Island. Special things about these games is that there's an ARG along with the video game itself, so it's understandable that the Live Action (Lucky Carder) sequence doesn't feel necessary.

If you're interested in the ARG part of Inscryption, a few channels out there like Game Theory have you covered. The puzzle solving and stuff are pretty intense too!

  6. Kaycee’s Mod is Act 1 turned into an actual rogue-like. It adds a bunch of gameplay stuff and over all balances the game. Lore wise, you can unlock logs from the late Kaycee and it reveals some minor bits of lore. It’s a cool read, but not necessary to understand the story and can be easily looked up online. If you only want the story, playing the Mod isn’t essential to the experience.

It is fun though. As I said, they add new stuff. It’s all tied to the challenge system where you put certain challenges in place to make the game harder. If you hit the max challenge level, you get an additional challenge to replace the final boss with a full version of the Grimora boss that got cut off, which is cool. I’d recommend trying it once to see if you like it. If you don’t, just look up the logs. Most lore comes from the ARG anyway, which other commenters have mentioned.

  7. The fact that Foreman never learned that Uroboros/Urobot gains a permanent +1 to it's stats everytime it days is very amusing to me.

Also, this game along with all the others of this creator, has tons of secrets messages. People have been working together too unravle since sme are behind of actual codes and cyphers.

  8. There is a whole ass ARG connected to Luke Carder and the Mullinverse in general, but if you're planning on playing other games from the package such as "The Hex", then I suggest you avoid watching anything related to said ARG, because it's packed with spoilers for other games.

  9. One thing you need to remember about leshy, he knew it was a game the whole time. He knew you would never realy die, he was playing the role of dungeon master and story teller, setting a grim remorseless tone to enjoy, he legitimately just wanted you and him to enjoy the game. So in the end it was all just good fun to him, neither of you truly hurt, just playing the game together, even when there was no score to be kept, even when the end closed in, he just wanted to enjoy one more hand

  10. I find it ironic that, while Magnificus clung to power the least throughout the game, and even foretold that struggling would be pointless, he was still the most desperate to hold on in the end. Also, don't worry, there's only one ending, all of this games secrets are either hidden as easter egg side content or very very very well hidden as ARG content.

Kaycee's Mod is an official expansion that turns the game into a proper roguelike with unlockable cards, limited story, unique challenges, and just you and Leshy in a cabin. It's a great play and a much more gameplay focused take of the same game with just the right amount of story content to make it interesting, I'd love to see a playthrough on the channel but that's up to you. However, if you want the deeper narrative to make any sense to you, just look up Game Theory video or something, making any sense of it yourself is hopeless, all the meaningful stuff is slid into the game as disconnected slights and loosely strung together Easter eggs.
