Genghis Khan: The Extreme Brutality Of The Medieval Mongol King | History By Numbers

Genghis Khan is portrayed as a villain in Western media due to his extreme violence and mass murders, while also being seen as a hero for his incredible achievements in creating the largest contiguous empire ever in only 25 years. His military campaigns were marked by strategic brilliance and extreme brutality, including the execution of enemies through methods designed to instil terror, such as pouring molten silver into the eyes and ears of adversaries. Despite his violent methods, Genghis Khan implemented policies of religious tolerance and meritocracy.

  1. Fun and informative video in the classic documentary style. The only thing I can comment on is that the mythology is inseparable from the historical fact, as is the case for so many ancient legendary figures. Modern society's current view of history – that it should be based on verifiable facts, that there should be archaeological as well as literary evidence, and that sources should be compared and corroborated against each other and against hard data like carbon-dating of artifacts and human remains, etc – was not the view of ancient people. Ancient people depended on stories handed down through generations. In that situation, the most captivating story- not necessarily the most accurate – is the one that wins and keeps getting passed on from generation to generation. Ancient peoples were far more likely to accept magic, divine intervention, and miracles as part of a historical narrative than we are today.

With that in mind, we have to parse the story of Ghengis Khan, and kind of separate out what we really know from what is great entertainment content in all the stories, myths, and legends that surround this figure.

The square mileage of the empire is probably pretty accurate. The 40 million deaths? Maybe not so believable. The newborn baby with a fistful of blood? Well…..probably not.

But even going with what is just factually provable, it remains that Ghengis Khan was one of the G.O.A.T.s of history, and did, in fact, create what we now call the Mongol nation. No doubt he sired a considerable number of offspring as well, but, as the video points out, we'll probably never have realistic numbers for modern people carrying his DNA.

  2. Please get your microbiology right. Yersinia pestis is a bacterium that is about 1/1000 of a millimeter (1 micron) in length. Much less than 1/10”. And the efficacy of the corpse-launching is very much disputed, as fleas rapidly leave corpses as their temperature drops. It’s more likely that the plague simply spread by means of rats making their way from the Mongol camp into the city.

  3. Chingiz himself was a red haired Turk according to the Chinese sources but he began his work with Mongol tribe. the word CHING in Turkic means something perfect, very desirable, well sorted, atraight and shoulders. IZ means effect and track but as a auffix it means extreme. this name was given to him because of his fine masculine body in adulthood but his initial name was Temuchin which again means perfectly sorted! in Turkic KHAGHAN means testimonial god and deity. Khan is descendant of Khaghan or lets say demigod. how ever his work ruined original Turkic ethnicities in central Asia. modern Turkic people in central asia have oriental features because of Mongolian admixture otherwise they were originally white.

  4. Can you imagine the German people right now… Hitler leading the most technologically advanced country at the time of WW2 and was only able to kill a fraction of the people Genghis Khan did on horseback with arrows and swords 🤔 Makes one question the difference and why one is allowed to be celebrated while the other is not?
