Gavin Peterson, Franke-Hildebrandt cases drive Utah child torture bill

Two cases that saddened and stunned people from one end of the state to the other are “driving” a child torture proposal, which had its first hearing at the state Capitol on Thursday.

Gavin Peterson, 12, died after alleged severe mistreatment by members of his family in West Haven, and former YouTube influencers Ruby Franke and Jodi Hildebrandt were each sentenced to years in prison after one of Franke’s emaciated children showed up at a neighbor’s home outside St. George.

The measure, SB 24, would set a minimum mandatory prison sentence of 10 years for persons convicted of child torture — and it defines the crime.

  1. Congrats! There around Europe, recognizing the urgent need to criminalize child torture and better support the local victim population is still not part of the political agenda at all. They'd rather keep facilitating our prolonged suffering and loss as surviving victims with experiences that the justice system itself invalidate (by never legally acknowledging the factual side of the stories). And I'm supposed to be thankful to be a "European citizen"
