Gas prices increase over shortage fear

Wholesale gas prices in some cities have reached their highest level in a year.

Sydney and Melbourne have seen the biggest increases in the short-term market, as industrial gas users pay more than double their usual prices for supply.

It’s after the Energy Market Operator issued a threat notice this week over fears of a potential gas shortage this winter.

The shortfall is being attributed to low wind power generation and little development in new gas projects.

  1. And Vic has at least 80 years of gas on land and in the the ocean but we don't touch it why Lirry Am Brosia is all scared of boogy man natural gas since if we use it we will have a CO2 cloud over our heads which will lead to tornadoes earthquakes and rainbows. And Bowen claims to go only with facts, lol where from the back of a fruitloops pack?

  2. No wonder Labor are Anti gas, I don't think they would care if the old folks froze to death because of the high energy prices. And to them it's all about their precious cheap renewable clean energy to save the world, huh what an absolute joke.

  3. It's an unfortunate characteristic of the left that no matter where they are in government in the world, it always eventually leads to tears and misery with the biggest losers being the lower middle and working classes. Some pundits speculated this Labor administration a single term government but I always dismissed this as implausible but these days I reckon at best they are a minority govt come 2025.

  4. Typical Sky news propaganda, the gas prices were high under Morrison, they are high now for a number of reasons, Ukraine for one, more to do with greed of the people running the gas companies. We are one of the largest exporters of gas in the world. We have plenty of gas. They just want more gas to export to increase their profits. Opening new gas fields will not reduce the price. Threatening to take these companies' licences away unless they reduce the domestic price will.

  5. Mainly coz liberals didn’t tax the extraction and then ring fence the domestic supply when they flogged off the licences for private gain. Liberals are not a serious bunch. Just whingers and populists

  6. History lesson people … this problem dates back about 30 years ago with the Australian Government placing a national resource in private hands, with little regulation or assurances around safeguarding our national supply. And that subsequence governments have failed to rectify. Just another instance where self interest came before public interest. Both sides of politics are to blame.
