Walking Dead may have higher highs, but man, going back and replaying Back to the Future really makes me appreciate that Telltale could make a really good point and click adventure game when they weren't weighing it down with any "Doc will remember that." nonsense. The ending was better, too.
To me, twdtt4 just reaks of cut out content. I'm sure that there was so much more choices that just were cut out because tell tale was already in so much troubles during the developpement. You can see that the story was supposed to be longer, the framework is here, the choices are suggested, and i'm sure there are burried dialogue options in the game that could prove my point.
I keep coming back to this game for the non sexualised queer romance, that's my only motivation to go through that dog water new frontier game.
For me I think Clem seeing Lee again after so long isn't like a after life sort of thing, or even a dream. I see it more as her brain giving her a moment to breath and remembering her comfort, Lee when she really needs it most in these hellish times. The car, and train where moments she felt the safest. And in game it really dose feel like that. Like every time it happens I will admit a part of me thinks the devs put it in to be like, "here is Lee again!" but with how it's framed and hearing lil child Clem's voice talking to Lee again just gives me such peace and comfort, that it's like a warm blanket surrounding me.
Also YOU FOR REAL!? NO REALLY? THAT'S THE ENDING!? No lie I refused to play the game for years since it felt really clear as day Clem was going to die at the end of her story, and I just had no idea how it would happen or me being ready to say bye to Clem. Now I didn't see it as in a way of her mirroring Lee, but I more felt that it was just her trying to be alive and doing the same for AJ. Mostly because of her wanting to give AJ the life she remembers having, that he missed out on due to how the world is. I guess I am going to back pedal, here cause now that I think about it. Lee sorta did the same. But i always felt in his ending by trying to keep Clem alive that maybe the cycle for Zombies could end one day with her just trying to grow in this horrible world and make it some how to it's end. But I see now that Clem might have repeated a cycle that now AJ is now a part of, but will not really know over time, and the people he interacts with what the 'past' or 'normal' was even like.
I do not care if this is the canon ending. Your ;what if' feels more canon that I see it clear as day. Sorry not sorry for saying you are more right then the people who did this last minute ending for the final episode.
The only true choices in the game are in season 1 which lead to Clem deciding to shoot Lee or not.
Everything else is just a fun game not our own narrative
The first game became one of my favorite games of all time do to your videos getting me into the series. I've been tuned in for A WHILE ☺️
Another thing that bothers me is this ending being completely gutpunched by the fact that in the Clementine comic she just gets a peg leg and fucks off, leaving AJ
The comic they did after the game following Clementine is just god awful
And then the Clementine Comics can further ruined the ending they already ruined.
Having the hindsight of TellTale Studios bankruptcy and closure I have to wonder how much of the financial burden of the time influenced the final season
I miss Kenny…
I can agree with some parts of this, but at least this ending was better than what they did with her in the comics, in the comics they had her LEAVE AJ, shes leaves whoever she was in a relationship with, if there was one i cant remember, she leaves with little to no supplies and ends up in a meaningless relationship with a girl who makes Sarah from season 2 look like clem from season 2, oh and it ends with the two having sex, im not kidding…..
Honestly I think the big issue about this ending is that they pulled that useless switcheroo for shock value, not necessarily that clem lived.
I'm personally really not a fan of the "traumatized girl who does morally Grey acts is destined to suffer her whole life then die horribly no matter what". It always feel punitive for the sake of being punitive. I think that breaking the cycle of sacrifice and death and going against the obvious death flags to live her life with the kid she protected the way Lee wasn't able to could be a more powerful ending than just her dying the way everyone expected her to just for the sake on looping back to the first game, that is if the writing acknoledge the idea of breaking the cycle / ""fate"" and could do the idea justice beyond just going "woo clementine lives yeah!!!"
Though I lot of stuff needs to be changed for this to truly work, and like other comments said they could and really should have brought in more disabled writers or consultants to do her aftermath justice.
All and all she doesn't even need to be shown to live a long long life, I think that her dying some years to maybe one or two decades but dying peacefully/ fufilled and joining Lee on that train as her adult self could be pretty impactfull
First things, first, Happy new year Mert! I hope 2024 is full of happiness and success to you and your family.
Now with that out of the way, I must say I got emotional watching this video remembering the good times of playing these games back during the lockdowns of 2020. And while to me season 3 is the second best after 1, I liked 4. It was an interesting ending to the series, although a disappointing one as I had expected Clem to kick the bucket but noooooo. Regardless, I felt burning hatred for Lily, I was still not over her shooting Carly in the face, especially when Lee had such good chemistry with her, I hated her and stood against her at every turn and sadly she ended up escaping alive as I shot arrows at her. The addition of AJ made me try and be as good of a rolemodel as I can and I think I did a pretty good job, minus the fact AJ laughs too much when looking at the beetlenick (or however you spell that) toy, that was weird…
They did actually consider having an ending where Clementine could die, but reasonably decided to drop the idea, because why waste precious time and resources on an ending that everyone would consider the bad ending anyway (source: developer commentary). There's no reason to believe they ever planned for a fixed ending with TWD4 where she would die, at least not since Kent Mudle took over as creative director of the season (whereafter the story changed a lot)
One of the many joys I experienced in this game was AJ holding and Clem and, by extension, me the player accountable. I played season 4 when I was 20 (I'm currently 22 lol) and I've never been a parent so having to be a good parent to AJ was honestly really difficult cause I wanted AJ to realize killing was only something he needed to do when he was in danger, but at the same time it was difficult to do that when Clem (Me) would kill anything that moved if I considered it a danger to AJ and me.
It made my version of parenting very contradictory, and when AJ calls you out for that, it was the first time in a game since NieR Replicant that I went "Damn, maybe I suck at being a parent". I think it was also the moment I realized that season 4 was my second favorite season in this franchise because the writing was just really good.

Thank you i hate the ending
Very excited to watch this one!
Personally I think it might have worked better if they amputated her leg immediately but have her still be concerned about turning anyway because of what happened to Lee. You wouldn't really have to change anything about that scene and it might have tied things together better, stayed more within the 'rules' but still give us that hopeful ending that Clementine so deserves. Plus it would have been another great way to show just how impacted by Lee and his passing she still was. I can definitely understand both sides of thinking she should have died and liking that she's still alive. I like what it seems they were trying to go for, just could have executed it better.
I loved your video. Having Clementine live just shows that they might do their best to make more money by any means, whether it’s new games (which is a bit unlikely) or Netflix tv show or movie. I didn’t like that but I didn’t hate it because I love Clem so much. I only played season 1 but watched TheRadBrad play the series and I think he even named his daughter after her because the game was what made his YouTube career so successful+it was a good game overall.
The worst part about the ending that you didnt mention, the amputation was pointless. Once the infection spread past the amputated limb it literally does nothing. Not only does it break in world rules it doesnt even make sense outside of that. They definitely just decided "nah were gonna trick them so good with this fakeout."
I loved the early seasons of TWD for the reasons you mentioned about Clementine having to be even more accountable for her choices for AJ's sake. I feel like Rick and Carl's dynamic was like that in the show (seasons 1-4 at least) and it was the most interesting part of it for me. Rick and Clem not only have to deal with the morality of their decisions, but also reckon with whether their moral example is defensible and worthy of passing on.
