Future energy: Can we keep the lights on?

Plans for energy companies to offer people discounts for cutting their electricity usage have been extended. Some households have been paid to lower their energy usage between 5pm and 6pm tonight and 4.30pm and 6pm on Tuesday – so, is it a sign of what’s to come?

Dermot Murnaghan presents a special programme, talking to those who have taken part and look ahead to how schemes like this may shape the future of energy consumption in Britain.

  1. Lol wtf is this nonsense. If climate change was so terrible we just build nuclear power plants. But since the UK has current plans to only build one, then its not as bigger issue is it. This programme is some weird dystopian nightmare. Load of nonsense. People will not allow this to happen.

This family have done this for 6 days for £20 🤣🤣🤣.

  5. The energy companies won't give money away. The rest of us will pay more to cover it while the self righteous sit shivering round a candle. A price increase is coming to cover this ludicrous behaviour. When they turn everything back on at 6 then guess when the new peak usage time is 🙄.

  6. If we could power the world of of the gaslighting from politicians and those that want to sell us something or are heavily invested in green initiatives… and the gullibility of the masses that don’t see what they are really up to… we could power the Earth forever.

  7. It shouldn’t be up to us to make changes, they’ve dug this hole it’s not our responsibility to fill it ack in. Same with carbon footprint #not our problem. There needs to be loads done to combat climate change but it’s not Caroline’s responsibility

  8. E-on pays back a lot because they overcharge so so so much. What E-on charged me before the huge increase is what I'm paying now with another company after all those significant increases.

  9. Self imposed blackout to avoid a blackout. Clever that. Why do we not question why? Is it because our subsidised wind energy that cost us billions doesn’t work to capacity. Coal fired power stations are on standby. We are being led by fools and idiots.

  10. People don’t seem to realise the where their energy consumption goes. Turning all the lights off is unnecessary. A decent LED light is only 3.4 watts.
