Love that you reviewed a Parliament-Funkadelic project, George Clinton is a fucking God.
This album gave me a less sophisticated Zappa vibe as well at times
Yeeeeeeeeeeeehhhhhhhhhhheeeeeeeeeeeaaaaahahahahahaahaaaaahhaahahahhas
I have to disagree with you on. It's not being a metal album, it's just as metal as Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin. As a matter of fact, the first time, I even heard of this particular album was funkadelic being mentioned in one of the first encyclopedias of heavy metal, which came out of 1982. So you were correct the first time when you said that people keep thinking of funkadelic. And more of a funk type context. But they were just as Rock and roll and a lot of the contemporaries where back in the late 60s and early 70s, they played with The Stooges DMC5 and Alice Cooper for crying out loud, and they were just as loud as a lot of those bands too. The earlier albums exemplify. This probably more than their later ones. Even though some of their later ones still have heavy numbers on them
Certainly not as good as dare iz a darkside that's for sho.
A very young Prince heard this album and received the message in it. The record is a Sutra about Tantra. You can create any Reality you like, if you understand the message. More Truth on Maggot Brain than in all organized religion combined.
It's really horribly recorded. Get some Standing on the Verge of Getting it On or Cosmic Clop if you are dipping your toes in the P-Funk pool
Eddie Hazel was also a wonderful vocalist check out Funkadelic's version of Open Our Eyes and Parliament's Let Me Be
I love this album
this is awesome man i love this news of this album that came out this morning i want you in my bed i love this music man!
so cool
Damn early Funkadelic. You scary
One of my all time favorite albums also. Smoked a blunt with George Clinton at a P-Funk show in Long Beach which was one of the highlights of my life. That was back when Diaper Man was still alive and playing and the show was out of this world. Saw em again several years later and it just wasn’t the same. Still go see George & Crew any chance you get. Living legend.
13 years ago i took a flight between kyiv and tbilisi (georgia) and in the airport there was a very loud and cheerful group of people. when we boarded the plane, one of them sat next to me. we talked a little and he said they are going to perform at the festival, i ask what do you play, he said funk, i asked with who he said with george clinton, there he is several rows ahead. i loved funkadelic for maggot brain the most at that time. he felt im a fan and asked for my name to put on a list for the show. of course i came. it was around 3 hours long, i believe there were 20 people with dancers and backing vocals. and when they started playing maggot brain and the solo hit — i was crying so hard, it was a blessing.
great review!
I didn’t hear this album until I saw a short of Anthony choosing Funkadelic over DSOTM. I thought it was blasphemous and there was no way.
After hearing the record 700 times since then, oh yeah it’s better than DSOTM.
Have you ever considered a Parliment/Funkadelic ranked or best ro worst. So technically 70-79 (81 if you include the record where they split off and reused the name woth no imput from Clinton/Collins)
As a layman i always thought, and was told, maggot brain was a pretty on point bit of guitar.. Even if it isnt, it knocks into a cocked hat all these flashy souless guitar masturbators like satriani et al..
I first heard this on some very good acid, we also watched Delicatessen, so i cried and laughed hard that same day and had a wonderful clear head for about six months after ..
A top 5 band for me, and this is one of their best. Eddie was obviously heavily Hendrix influenced bit he took it in some wild directions. One of my favorite guitarists, and his vocal on open our eyes is incredible
Eddie Hazel's guitar on the title track is so moving. Brings me to tears most of the time.
my boy have you done jamiroquai
ty segall does maybe the best hit it n quit it cover I've ever heard
