Funding for Adelaide’s ship building future secured



After months of speculation, the future of South Australia’s ship building program has been decided.

The Navy Surface Fleet Review revealing less frigates for the state but an ongoing workflow for decades to come.

With the projects and funding secured, it’s now where to find the workers that had industry experts concerned at The Advertiser’s Defending Australia Forum.

“Today’s announcement is providing certainty so that I can say to an electrician in Adelaide ‘you’ll have a job for decades’,” says Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy.

“You can plan a family, pay your mortgage, send your kids to school, and know that every day you’ll be getting up working on defending the nation by constructing the most advanced surface vessels in the world.”

  1. Smoke and mirrors. The only certainty is the Hunter Class have been reduced by 33%, there's only $1.7 billion available in the short-term and a rough plan for 10 years. Where did all the Barracuda Submarine project money disappear to? That could have built one more AWD now!

    There is no more money, just promises.
    There is no contract, there is no design.
    This is just more hot air and empty promises from a government that has not increased defence funding.
    Their plans will be delivered after the next war is over and we’ve already capitulated to the enemy’s demands.
    Marles should resign.
