  1. Beginning with an afterthought: Just realized all of this may be a moot point since I'm actually an episode behind, but I guess I'll find out soon enough what Matt decided to do with it. So before reading or replying, please no spoilers for C3E36. On with my now likely impossible idea for that episode.

Okay, I know this would be insane, but I kind of want the next episode of campaign 3 to be a sort of bait-and-switch one-shot. Instead of having Matt try to voice all of the old Vox Machina characters, have the episode begin with all of the cast playing their old characters instead. Give Matt certain behind the scenes veto abilities and guidance, but let the players discuss how their old characters would want to deal with this (and maybe let Liam sit in as Orym or as a representative of the Raven Queen, who if I'm not mistaken has a temple in White Stone). On the one hand, you would expect Vox Machina to immediately want to jump in and help, but maybe not when you think about it. Keyleth would maybe have a newfound respect for the natural order of life and death, being that Vax was the Raven Queen's champion and what is dead should stay dead. Pike may have played pretty loose with revivals in the past, but those were for her own comrades, she has no ties to Laudna at all, and as such may not want to take an active role in bringing her back, especially if the party isn't all in agreement. Scanlan and Grog are the most likely to blindly advocate for Bell's Hells, given that Grog is a softy and Scanlan would likely call anyone who refused to help Laudna a hypocrite. Vex and Percy in particular would likely be adamantly AGAINST bringing Laudna back, in part just because of the whole Raven Queen thing, but more importantly because of the Delilha Briarwood aspect. Once her name comes into the conversation, the odds of Laudna getting revived may be a non-starter for half the old team. And even if they do agree to try and bring her back, Laudna's not exactly fully alive to begin with, so a resurrection in the conventional sense may actually be beyond Pike's abilities, forcing the two teams to dive into the Briarwood's notes and methods to try and figure out what Laudna even is and if they're able to bring her back at all. My point is, that would be so much more interesting from the perspective of Vox Machina than it would be from the perspective of Bell's Hells, and I could more easily see Matt interjecting the occasional "Pike can't do that, and she would know that," or "Keyleth is aware of certain world events that prevent her from offering what you just promised," those moments would just be simple little rewinds as opposed to having Matt trying to articulate what the relevant members of the group had to say and what they would think TO the people who had played them before.

  2. what is the point of playing a combat scenario if there is no risk? like yeah the scene could be cool with how things happen but without the risk of losing there is no excitement in the combat itself

  3. Travis reading the prompter: "stay tuned because after the break we'll be playing Five Nights At Freddy's- what's that?"
    me: oh no
Travis after the break: "…so we'll be strapping on the Oculus-"
    me: oh NO

  4. As someone who's experienced 3+ TPKs, I can tell you, you all definitely gained a merit badge – its just not the actual TPK merit badge. The close call is scary. The real deal is not scary – its heartbreaking, a totally different feeling than even losing characters is. Its the kind of heartbreaking where you go "Does the story just end? Not one person's story, ALL of our stories? Do we just start a new campaign entirely?"

Big big difference. I'm not saying what CR went through wasn't serious stuff, its just… let me put it this way. When I DM, I will do anything I can reasonably do that doesn't make it worse, even (if absolutely necessary) pull out the Deus Ex Machina tricks that are available within the story (if any) to prevent a TPK. TPKs are just not fun, nothing about them is fun, and if its not fun why have that be part of the game?

For those who are thinking they don't like what I'm saying or how I DM, I'm not suggesting I would save everyone, but save something – salvage the stories, allow at least one character to survive long enough to pass the torch, anything but a dead end.

  5. Its confirmed that Marisha refused to roll a new character and ONLY wants to play Laudna. This is a slap in the face to the group, and to Talisin who took his own early character death gracefully. This forces the group to HAVE to focus on Laudna and make it ALL about her.

She specifically picks a race type that has no soul, and by all reason should be near IMPOSSIBLE to revive if killed without something like Wish or True Res. A real Twat.

  6. Laura reminded me of that Spinal Tap album "Sniff the Glove" (btw, always a bad idea, fyi)
I saw Poltergeist when i was maybe 13, and it scared the crap out of me. Traumatized me for life.
I don't like the looks of this game either.
I like Matt's commitment to the costume bit tho. The other 3 just bailed.

  7. Bell's Hells: "We should run."

Me: "Is… is running an option? Let's backtrack – Laudna left this woman up on a balcony in a bubble of magical darkness on the other side of the fortress… AND SHE GOT HERE BEFORE YOU! I don't think running is a good idea."

  9. I am sincerely curious, why did SO MANY people think Matt would've been like "No, it was all a dream?"
Like, is this a Hollywood movie?
    Is it scripted?
Nah, its DnD. People die. It sucks. Maybe you'll get revived, maybe not. Roll a new character.
Matt has made it clear, he will kill PCs, do not ever doubt him
