I'm more frustrated with vertical *re*gression. I love going back and playing older content, but it comes at the cost of your job playing like garbage.
This is a hard watch, ginger isn’t making much sense here, if crafted gear gave the same ilvl then there isn’t much incentive to do harder content. Also like Chris said, savage gear is only bis for like half the gear?
time should not be a problem.., even if it takes longer, it should be attainable thru side content, that also has other rewards to focus on..
like 24 man raids & hunts, they offer other things besides upgrade mats for 620 gear
They just need to make everything cheaper. They lowered the cost for head/hands/feet in savage from 6 books to 4 but I don’t think it was enough. In my opinion the Chest/pants/wpn should only cost 6 books and accessories should cost 2. Tomb gear needs to be cut by at least 50%. There should be no reason I have cap out for 4 weeks JUST to by a chest and legs.
The fact this game has 1 character for all jobs is awesome from a casual perspective, meaning I don’t have to play through all that story stuff on alts, but now I’m forced to only focus on gearing up one job/role at a time. If you can gear up faster then you can start working on gearing other jobs and it wont feel like such a slog, IMO anyway.
I'm not sure I really understand what Brian's point is. Tomes are already a wide path towards gear. The only thing that would be required is The Hunt, since upgrade mats are only available with hunt tokens for the patch they drop in. But even then, you get one a week by doing the alliance raids on the odd patch. I get the crafted gear problem, kind of. But its like Chris said, some crafted pieces are better for certain jobs because they have more materia slots. The only thing that's different is a slightly smaller number, and the color I guess. If you can allow yourself to not get hung up on the number, than it shouldn't be an issue.
I might just never be able to fully understand his perspective, as I come from the point of view of someone who has never worried about iL beyond meeting the minimum for entry.
I have always thought locking BIS behind raiding is stupid. There should be a route in every major form of content to get BIS. If I want to pvp for my BIS, I should be able to. If I want to do challenging pve content that isn't raiding, why not.
It trivializes peoples effort. When someone puts in extra time and effort to achieve a difficult goals completion there should be a reward. It entices them to continue that behavior and meet those challenges.
Why would gear optimization matter to someone who wasn’t meeting that challenge? You get what you need to do the job.
Improvements to ability and performance come from experience and learning. It isn’t arbitrary walls put in place if it’s a direct indication of player skill. That’s what savage is and always has been. It gets harder each tier.
You don’t change the race because a runner can’t catch the other runners. You train to compete with the other runners.
Ya know what the real tragedy is? Dyable raid gear is locked behind savage. That's the true injustice. I'm only half joking here.
Crafted gear can be BIS without the 10/15 extra Item level currently. If We gave them the increased ilvl while still maintaining the stats. The conversation would become "why is crafting the only way to get the best in slot" since the stats would be higher but share the same Item level…. Then we would have to talk about retooling all of crafting gear.
I understand the frustration of not having multiple avenues to get the highest ilvl. But it's a vertical progression game so there's always something to chase.
People that don't raid complain about gearing for raid.
Awesome.
You do better with ilvl if you know how to play, and I really doubt ppl who doesn’t raid at all, know to to play a job to “perfection”, high level raiders will defo do more dps with 610 ilvl than most ppl with 630, and you can get to 630 without raiding, just gonna take longer and you can’t get bis, but again, if you don’t do raids, why do you care about bis?
Next video “is unfair to only give ultimate weapons to people who do ultimate “.
People clear savage in week 1 already. The increase of power is just a reward to those who complete it and also helps those who struggle with the tier and slowly power creep their stats to clear the rest. Now I would like there to be a way to get more gear for other jobs I play. As I mainly play gnb this means if I wanted to go do savage with friends as a dps or healer the process would take a lot more time since most my resources have gone into my main role. But again you can just buy the 610 gear for said job and have weaker stats than the rest of the group since technically it’s still clearable.
crafted gear has never gotten you into the same gearscore as tomestone gear.
now I get what Chris is saying, the number isn't 100% indicative of the power level of the gear, for example, I SWEAR that if I see another SCH piece of gear without +CRIT on it I'm going to *LEGIT* scream… Seriously a relic weapon SCH book, without +CRIT. why you do this SE??? Keeps crafted book with +crit
however overall.. if you average it out, in FF14 Tomestone gear will just be better than crafted gear. Especially for DPS monkies, Healers it gets more muddy, much like the +crit situation for SCH cause you WANT those crit shields and you want your crit high enough to get them fairly reliably… but a LOT of SCH pieces don't have +CRIT. But that's the life of vertical gear progression…
Honestly I prefer Guildwars2 gearing system / stat building system.
my Druid needs 100% boon duration… I gear for 100% boon duration, ok done.
DPS engineer needs 75% crit chance to hit 100% crit cap when I have Fury… ok.. done.
there are more parts to the system, but the system is easy to read in GW2.
Idk what Bryan's problem with ilvl is. Just chill. It's unnecessary to freak out about an arbitrary number and he's just being overly combative about a pointless number.
I really don't understand any part of his argument.
If you remove that exclusive incentive you effectively kill the raid scene. Becoming strong by killing difficult bosses is something a lot of mmo players like to strive for.
Also catch up patches exist. You already can get nearly the same power as a raider. You just have to wait a little longer. The only thing i would change is make gearing a little quicker. It takes far to long to get bis in a game where you can play everything on a single character.
I think you’re awesome Brian, but i find your takes on gear to be far to “i wish this game was like 11” and less what would actually be good for 14 as the game it is.
Bringing up Destiny is a terrible comparison. Destiny has stats, perks, weapon effects, hidden effects, and exotics have added effects and special features. ATM destiny2 has the best armor system and enhancement system in any online game (imo). FFXIV has me wondering if im losing braincells with how simple the armor system plays.

The upgraded tome gear is 630 but requires raid twines and shines. There are few edge case where 620 tome gear is better than 630 abyssos gear, but I think only due to racial stat tiers and the different is basically negligible. Perhaps you're thinking of the upgrade 630 tome gear being BiS for many slots along with the 630 abyssos gear. In almost every case however the 630 abyssos gear is still better than the 620 tome gear due to the main stats, even if the substats aren't what you prioritize for your job.
Lots of people here salty that they can’t clear savage even though it’s totally lol nowadays.
9:30 – the crafted gear doesn't go from 610 to 620. Not sure where you got that from. I think BiS should always be locked behind vertical progression systems, especially when there's horizontal catch up systems. If you skip a patch you don't have to climb all the way from where you left off.
Having it locked behind the savage raids, it's to show off an achievement you made. You say making more pathways doesn't take anything away, it takes away the special feeling of accomplishing the content. If everyone is special, nobody is.
I feel like the item level cap is a chase that not everyone is worried about. Since gear progression is vertical, most casual players will just acquire the gear as needed. With the new players in our FC (they came through during that summer of the WoW exodus lol), they are all casual and they just pick up what they can with whatever dungeon or tomes they have. Since not everyone is at endgame it's not important. For those that are, they are just focused on making sure they can at least get into the content with the min ilvl. I don't do savage or ex trials so I just gear up with new tomes. Mainly to make sure I'm good enough for what comes as far as new content (dungeons/norm trials and raids/24 man) and to be strong enough to help any new players through any of that same content also.
Sorry you dont have the time to raid and get the extra power, that is hbow the game works, if you wish to get it invest the time, thats how it always be.
As I see it, max ilvl is a reward we earn through either clearing the toughest content or devoting an impressive amount of time to the more casual content. However, one of those two things is arguably more difficult and stressful than the other.
High tier raids necessitates more coordination and skill than the casual content. Therefore, I've got no problem with raiders reaching max ilvl faster or the game locking max ilvl behind the most difficult content.
Getting that reward through the easier content just doesn't seem fair. Oh, and for context, I'm more of a casual content player and I've got no problem with knowing max ilvl is locked behind the most difficult content. Let those who earn it have it and show it off in Limsa.
raid rewards should be skins 😛 ESO kinda does that – it has raid gear though but the raid gear is literally only effective in raids cuz it says so on the perk descriptions 😛 but you DO get cool skins from beating them 😛
TLDR: new world is king 😛
I don't mind if the gear is locked in Savage for the current tier, otherwise what the hell are you chasing? Honor? Glamour (more likely)?
I mean, I stepped back from FF now due to other game priorities. I DO feel weaker because I did not cap my tombstone every week, but that's my choice, and all I can do is FOMO about it.
Bold of you to assume that criterium content wont be capped at a particular item level to keep that content relevant for years to come. and it makes me glad that Brian admitted he wants horizontal progression over vertical. Should watch Josh Strife Hayes video on that on why horizontal vs vertical will always clash.
Honestly, I think mmos need to incorporate a secondary gearing system into the open world, that is a green version of the raid gear . It doesn't have to be acquirable as fast. Space it out over a few weeks of grinding so that way it is comparable to the time spent in raiding. Sharing the ilvl is fine but you have to work for it. Imagine spending 15 weeks to clear a raid series and get fully bis and find someone in Limsa, who grinded half a day for it in gems.
I almost wish I raided this teir instead of craft. It almost sounds hard from a healing perspective. I thought healing in p1-4 was a bit boring. The fights were fun but healing isn't hard. Especially after a few peices. The fights themselves were more challenging since it was my first tier. Its just not my kind of content in general.
I spent my prime on this one group of peoples who were really nice to me when I started playing.😃
To summarize, Brian is fine with those who want to reach the top by climbing the harsh terrain of Mount Savage where the highest item level is absolute.
Brian wants to walk the path of least resistance, where another route is implemented that replaces the harsh terrain with a smooth trail to the summit.
Being forced to climb the mountain is seen as unfair to Brian.
This video in a nutshell.
EDIT: Chris made a similar analogy later in the video. Go figure.
Lol console players might actually end up being much better players for wow bc they dont have bots n addons literally twllin them when to move
Brian can’t clear the raids apparently.
I hate the ilvl in game! Chris is right about ilvl gear that some lower lvl gear is better & has better stats for your job! All gear in the game has different stats for jobs & it has some stats that are meaningless for said jobs! Locking gear behind Savage is not good at all! I never run Savage, I have no desire too! I wish gear could be upgraded through crafting whether it is crafted or found as loot! Materia should upgrade gear more than it does! I would love to slowly upgrade personal gear over time by finding loot in the world & stuff from Dungeon Bosses!
the time gate needs to go with weekly resets and stuff, if i want to neck beard the raids and gear my character up to max week 1 i should be allowed to, that being said, tomestones shouldnt have a cap, and weekly resets needs to be erased.
