First time I saw this was the week it was released on VHS, from a TV & Appliance store that rented tapes back in the day. I wore out that rental copy of The Monster Squad, then watched it whenever it was on HBO. I've probably seen this movie more than any other movie. No one I know has even heard of it.
I watched it 3 days ago and now I'm trapped in a YouTube rabbit hole. I'm not complaining, just updating.
Also there was the very short lived monster squad sat morning tv show
I remember being on the subway the summer it came out and seeing the movie posters all over. Wanted signs with the monsters on it. Had my mom bring me to see it when it came out and have loved it since. Always felt this movie deserves the same praise as goonies.
The amount of 80s movies that bombed at Box Office that are my favorites due to the glory of VHS is astounding. Big Trouble in Little China, Buckaroo Banzai, Cloak and Dagger, Monster Squad… Every one a bonafide classic either ahead of its time or just up against too much competition. Most have found their audience now, which is great. I think only Cloak and Dagger still flies under the radar undeservedly. Monster Squad is extra special, though. It looked and felt epic and natural at the same time. What could have been pure shlock actually had some bite, and arguably laid the groundwork for the success of a certain Netflix series. (Well, that and Goonies and IT and ET…)
80s me liked this movie! It's not on my list of all time favorites, but it was good. I don't think I have watched it since the 80s, though. 😊
Saw it in theaters and loved it!
I think between Ghostbusters and Monster Squad I can see where 95% of my adult sense of how horror should feel came from, as I absolutely love freely intermingling actual nightmares with a rollicking goofy good time
Also unironically "wolfman's got nards" was the younger 1980s generation's equivalent revelatory badass statement to "if it bleeds, we can kill it"
I believe I saw it on a recorded off of HBO VHS cassette at my older brothers house back in the day. I love it and the cult following it has. If Goonies and this film are on TV at the same time, I'm choosing The Monster Squad
I am the right age to have seen this as a kid, but I didn't get around to actually watching it until 2019 or so.
And, well, I can't stand it. "Crass" is underselling it; without the nostalgia factor of having seen it as a kid there's just too much in it that hasn't aged well at all. Yes there are some funny bits, but it's all brought down by the gross treatment of Lisa and all the kids running around with firearms.
I remember seeing this on VHS as a kids, and all my friends wanted to fight monsters, just running around teh street, making sure nothing evil was coming. Kids are stupid, but it was so much fun.
LOVE The Monster Squad!!! saw it in theaters in 1987!!!! i do have it on DVD. i watched it with my kids when they got to the right age and they loved it!! i was about 12 when i saw it. good times!
Saw this on vhs when it first released on video and has been one of my favorites ever since. Watched it on repeat on HBO about a year later
Loved Monster Squad! Great movie for its time
This is the first time I'm hearing about it. Gonna snag the 4k release.
This movie seems so gloriously cheesy that I wish I HAD watched it while growing up- now I feel like I missed out!!
My dad took me to see this in the theater then to tcby yogurt after. It was fucking awesome.
That Shadow Company script sounds alot like Universal Soldier, i tried google to see if they where related but couldn´t find anything about it.
The only thing i could find was one article about never-made movies and the quote -"Speaking of what kind of a movie ‘Shadow Company’ would have been…well, think of it as of a crossover between ‘Universal Soldier’, ‘Platoon and ‘Night of the Living Dead’. "
This was an HBO staple
This was one of those movies I had seen some of as a kid on VHS at my great aunt’s house in the late 80’s/early 90’s and up until a couple of years ago had no idea what movie it was. I only remembered the end scene where the girl reads from the book and being TERRIFIED. It was crazy how I had it built up in my imagination all these years as this horrifying scene and how relatively mild it actually is by comparison.
I saw this movie as a kid in the theaters. It was a double feature at the UA 8 in the Buena Park Mall in California. The second movie was Masters of The Universe.
The reintroduction of original recipe Beardless Dan
Saw this with my cousins on home video when I was 7 or 8, n still watch it every now then, it was awesome then n still awesome now! My name is Horace! 😂😂😂
I watched this in the movie theater with my older brother. This movie has always been good in my opinion
I have loved this movie ever since I was a kid. It would come on TV and my parents would look in the TV guide to see when it was coming on and they'd mark the calendar. It wasn't until I bought the Blu Ray in college that I heard it was actually a flop in theaters. I just assumed everyone loved it like me and that it was a smash hit when it was released.
