  1. also isn’t this the first year ncaa’s weren’t free via espn 3. One had to upgrade tv package to include espn u or 3 or buy espn+ if one didn’t have it.

  2. I recorded some parts of the tournament so my viewership might not have counted that. I still watched the entire tournament, most of it live, and rewatched some as well.

  3. Starocci is so cringey i get douche chills every time I watch his interviews. I think Parris should get it. I’d prob say Aaron Brooks or Yianni had they not lost. Brooks and yianni seem like a good representatives of the sport. Starocci seems like a guy that thinks wrestling is lucky to have him. Even Austin O Conner has a legit case with Alirez, but Parris completely dismantled every opponent he had.

  4. Low viewership numbers are more of a statement about ESPN than the popularity of college wrestling. Reports indicate that the venue in Tulsa was packed for every session, so I wouldn’t worry too much about TV numbers.

  5. I'm sure numbers are down either way. Cormier called last NCAAs that's a boost, Gable is a super star that's a boost. This year didn't have a buzz.

  6. What do you guys think of Lee bailing on wrestlebacks? And then claiming medical forfeit no less. What? So much for “excuses are for wusses.” I get it he was devastated, but is that really an excuse when the team race is still going and he’s part of the team? Not just, but the leader. Sure saw Daton Fix swallowing that lump and getting back on the horse. No doubt he didn’t want to be there, and even ended up losing again. But he was there. I would contend that Fix was in an even worse mental state than Lee. Am I overthinking this? It just seems to send all the wrong messages.

  7. Get rid of Askren and his hatred for Penn State. Cannot give them any credit and finds some bad call, or bad shot by the opponent, or bad tactic by the opponent that gave the victory to a Nittany Lion. Also, the constant insults toward those of us who root for Penn State as to our "biased" views – like who we would vote the Hodge for is really annoying. Growing up it was all Okie State and Iowa and deservedly so. No one that I knew begrudged them the attention. Waited 50 years to be excited for my state team and this is what I get. ugh

  8. I think the UFC definitely impacted the viewership. I ended up watching both and it was like 6 hours of both sports Back to back not sure if everyone has the patience to do that. Bad timing on the UFC Card especially for a sport that should be endorsing wrestling.

  9. The reason ratings are low is because many matches have long, boring periods where it seems as though all wrestlers are defensive, counter wrestlers. They circle the mat grabbing each others neck and there is no scoring. Riding is the same as stalling for the average viewer. I’m a huge fan of wrestling and many matches had me turning the channel.
Riding and riding time should be eliminated. Riding is holding one guy down so he can’t get away and he can’t really wrestle. It stops wrestling!
I had my girlfriend sit down and watch it with me. She kept asking me why nobody was scoring? Why is that one guy is just trying to hold that guy down? Nothing is happening. She got up and left after three matches. She wanted to leave after two but I convinced her to stay because the next one was supposed to be good. It was like three to two with two escape points, a riding time point, a technical violation point and a stalling. No actual points from any moves. She left and I turned the channel.
I recorded the rounds and go back and pick matches to watch. Lots of fast forwarding because of no scoring and not many attempts to score.Folk style is boring! Stalling is rewarded- (riding )and the wrestlers are allowed to go whole periods being cautious and defensive. Adopt more international rules that make WRESTLERS WRESTLE! Just because riding is hard and takes great skill it is very boring to watch for the average fan. It’s a very old style that is no longer relevant. People want to see lots of action and scoring. Folk style has seconds of great actions and minutes of nothing.
The ratings are low because a great deal of the product is very, very boring to watch. When there is action it’s fantastic but you have to wade through a marathon of boredom to get to it.

  10. What a tournament.

Vito is well deserving of OW. What’s great is all the valid arguments for other weight classes being the toughest like 165 and 197. If Carr had won he would be hands down the OW and Hodge for me. Especially with the pathway he had. Beating a runner up and champ to make it to the finals.

165 having 3 champs, and a two runners ups(Griffith counts twice).

    197. Two finalist from last year did not make it back to the finals. The champ ( a former runner up) did not place last year.

174 Carter was so dominant that we forget how tough his weight class was.

125, 133, 165, 174, 197 all had former champs that did not repeat.

Six weights had returning runner ups who did not make it back to the finals.

Several first time All Americans, several who got back to the podium who did not do it last year.

Then there are all the former All Americans that did not repeat.

Finally, Ramos’s vision quest with parallels to Larry Owings. Last year when Ramos was at 133 he pinned Luca Byrd. He drops to 125 and pins Lee in a similar fashion.

We remember more of what Gable did after his loss to Owings. I hope the same for Spencer and he goes on to win gold at the Olympics.
