Friday October 21 -Richard Skipper's Friday Wrap Up Show: Celebration Of The Mind Day

The family is one of nature’s masterpieces.” – George Santayana.

Celebration of the Mind Day is observed on October 21, on the birthday of the famous mathematician, Martin Gardner. Developed by the Gathering 4 Gardner Foundation, Celebration of Mind (CoM) is meant to unite people for a day to explore puzzles, games, math, and magic.

I will be bringing some great minds together to celebrate the end of another week. Reach out to me if you have something to promote!
I’ll be joined by Barbara Rew! Barbara K. Rew has been a child advocate for most of her adult life.

Currently she is the Washington, D.C. representative for A Minor

Consideration. Ms. Rew feels she owes a debt to children working in

the entertainment industry, because as a sick kid she watched a lot

of television. “I feel these people gave up their childhood’s to

entertain me,” she says. Since 1993, as a member of A Minor

Consideration, Ms. Rew served on a number of committees and boards

dealing with non-profit groups and Government agencies. Some of the

issues addressed include:

Addiction prevention.

Safe and non-exploitative working conditions.

Adequate education for working children.

Ms. Rew participated in working groups advising General Barry

McCaffrey of the Office of Drug Policy and the Department of Labor.

Since 1991 she has hosted a community television talk show,

Barbara’s Choice Personalities, where she has interviewed many

people from the community involved with children’s issues. Groups

Ms. Rew’s other community activities include serving as a fund

raising speaker for the Hospital for Sick Children. Her efforts

assisted the hospital in obtaining the funds for building a new wing

and garage. She was a member of the Friends of the Bowie Library

bringing her love of reading to children. “One of my proudest days

as a child was when I got my first library card. I want all children

to feel the pride and joy I felt from using the public library.” Her

efforts supported the funding and building of Opportunity Park, the

first park to be fully accessible for all children including

children with disabilities. She also supports several volunteer

groups for children, women, disabled people and the elderly. Ms. Rew

also served as a volunteer on the Bowie Hotline in the late 1980’s.

  1. Yet another thoroughly fascinating Friday Wrap-Up edition that seems to have flown by. We raise a toast to celebrate the lives and legacies of Susan, Lucy, and Joanna, and send condolences and deep sympathy to their communities of loved ones. The concept, notion, reality, and phenomenon of familiness is irresistibly heartwarming.

Thanks to Richard and his production family for bringing us together; and thanks also to guests Meg, Michael, Barbara, and Goldie for the pleasure of their virtual company, conversation, and insights.

I concur with Richard that there's no time like now to connect with a loved one by phone. His reference to the deceased being "in the next room" — and just around the corner — harkens on a scene amidst the 1996 "Christmas in the Airwaves" episode, starring the magnificent Betty Buckley, of the TV series, "Remember WENN." The "in the next room" reference appears in the linked nearly full episode at around 13:50; you however might want the full context of the scene by viewing from 00:00.

    Gratefully,

  2. Richard – this one was a delightful surprise – so I barely had time to think, let alone get nervous about what you would ask. You do ask the most thought provoking questions – lol. But once again, this was a wonderful experience, especially sharing the time with Meg Flather, Michael Colby, and Barbara Rew. As always, you have a way of leading the conversation down very interesting paths, being the perfect guide – and bringing out the best in all of your guests, but also creating a real connection between your guests and your audience. Keep on keepin' on – you're our dealer of happiness and celebration – and we need you need to keep us supplied! 🥰🥰🥰

  3. So honored to be asked. Meg, Goldie, and Barbara were so eloquent discussing important and timely issues. I was privileged to be in their and your company. Just the other day, I wrote on Facebook about a great sense of loss in the people who have left us in recent times. Thank you for being a forum to share our appreciation of these wonderful people.
