I cannot recommend Will Eisner’s “The Plot” — in which he refutes the PotEoZ — enough. One of the most towering figures in the history of comic books and graphic novels chose to devote the last of his energy and life to destroying that hoax, so you know he serious he viewed the topic.

The Protocols of the Elders of Zion is the ur-hoax of modern antisemitism. To be sure, Jews have been despised by European Christians for centuries, but every single bit of nonsense you hear about Jews controlling all aspects of modern life behind the scenes has its roots in the Protocols. It's indeed the single most dangerous literary hoax in history.

Of interest to Simon, since he lives there: One of Umberto Eco's last books, "The Prague Cemetery", is a fictionalized history of the composition of the Protocols. Interestingly, the only completely fictional character in the book is the protagonist, probably the single most loathsome protagonist in all of modern literature. Everyone else is either a real historical figure or a compilation of real historical figures. Since the Protocols were in fact composed at some point by someone, it's not impossible that Eco's imaginary figure isn't too far from the truth.
The title comes from the fact that, according to the Protocols, the Elders met at night in the Old Jewish Cemetery in Prague.

I thought there had been a new revelation that the Codex Gigas was actually a lot younger than previously established or a forgery or something like that. Not sure if a legend of supernatural events counts as a hoax, since the originator of the legend may very well have believed it. At the time of the legend's likely origin, people still believed in four humors and demon possessions. Demon writing a book instead of making people dance to death seems about reasonable.
Very much unlike the other examples in the video which all had clear originators knowingly making up stories. Although it's amazing that millenia after Plato we still take people more literally than they want us to (bathtub guy).
