Found an EPIC (& a little SCARY) camp spot in Nun’s Valley – Hiking in Madeira Island

One of the most spectacular remote villages is hidden between steep ravines in the heart of Madeira Island. The Nun’s Valley (Curral das Freiras in Portuguese) is a special place with an interesting history and the best place to start many spectacular hiking trails.

What I love about the island is the multitude of landscapes and climates you can experience in one single hike and this last 2-day hike across Madeira island was the perfect way to say goodbye before starting my next big project: The Peaks of Europe.
I crossed one more time the island, from North to South following the Caminho Real 27 or better said, an adapted version of it. I started my trail in Arco de Sao Jorge with an amazing cliff hike until Boaventura. The plan was to follow then the PR2, hike from Lombo do Urzal until Curral das Freiras and go to Pico Ruivo on the way. This would be only the first day. The second one would take me to Funchal, straight through Nun’s valley, and afterwards with a breath-taking levada walk along Levada do Curral, only things didn’t go as expected and I had to look for another trail to reach sea level once more.
