Fortescue Metals announces plans to decarbonise by 2030

Mining giant Fortescue Metals has announced plans to decarbonise its iron ore operations by 2030, saying it will invest more than $9 billion building batteries and greening its fleet of machineries, vehicles and trains.

Sky News Business Reporter Edward Boyd says it’s a “pretty ambitious announcement”.

“6.2 billion US dollars, it’s about 9.2 billion Aussie dollars invested, over the course … from basically now until 2030, but the bulk of the investment will be from 2024 to 2028,” Mr Boyd told Sky News Australia.

“That’s going to result in about 1.2 billion Australian dollars’ worth of cost savings each year, and those cost savings will come from 700 million litres of diesel not being used by 2030 and 15 million gigajoules of gas being saved by 2030 per annum as well.

“And that will result in about avoiding roughly three million tonnes of carbon emissions each year.”

  1. If they can afford the downtime when the renewables are not performing well for a week or more due to weather conditions then they may be OK, but that's no way to run a normal economy or a society. If they are generating surplus power and converting it to liquid fuels they can have enough onsite storage to cover most contingencies, but there is no way it is not going to make their operating costs a lot higher.

  2. at what cost to the taxpayer? govt grants, or tax offsets. this will be why forrest is buying up the gascoyne region, to cover it with turbines and solars. why not go nuclear? be a trend setter

  3. How can they "decarbonise" when EVERYTHING! is made of carbon ? Even their glass houses and high horses and podiums …. they need to come down to earth and realize that humans cannot live without carbon !
