The six First Nations people involved in the AFL investigation into mistreatment allegations at the Hawthorn Football Club have thrown aside their anonymity.
In an open letter, AFL champions Cyril Rioli and Carl Peterson have revealed themselves as part of the group central to the long running saga, as they declare they’re taking the Hawks to the Human Rights Commission.
The players and families say they were “betrayed” by the club and control of their lives was taken away from them.
The letter from former Hawks star Cyril Rioli and his wife Shannyn Ahsam-Rioli, ex-players Carl Peterson and Jermaine Miller-Lewis and Jermaine’s wife Montanah, as well as former Indigenous advisor Leon Egan, was published late on Friday 2nd June 2023. It details the impact felt by the families who prompted the review.
