David Lammy has been speaking to Sky News about a new “world first” sanctions regime to target people smugglers, choke off their funding, and stop small boat crossings.
The foreign secretary says he wants to “go after those who are smuggling people and the supply chains that they rely on”.

What nonsense! The boats could be stopped today: the border patrol checks every illegal immigrant for a passport. If they do not have a valid passport the illegal should be returned to France. It could be implemented immediately. Somebody tell Lammy the traffickers will disappear and pop up in another guise in 24 hours. He knows it, Labour knows it, the World knows it. This is incredibly sensible and innovative legislation. They're following the money, changing the economic incentives so that smuggling is more difficult and most importantly less profitable.
