Several lanes in Kolkata and suburbs do not have footpath for pedestrians. So people on foot, motorcycle and cars all use the same road. When pedestrians use both sides of the road the space for motor vehicles is reduced. Will it help if one side of the lane is demarcated for pedestrians only? Similar to what has been done at Salt Lake Sector V (Nabadiganta). If it is not feasible then perhaps pedestrians can walk opposite to direction of vehicular traffic. Then they will not have to worry about cars or motorcycles coming from behind. They will be able to see the approaching vehicles and move to their right to make room for the vehicles to pass. It will also reduce honking to alert pedestrians when a vehicle approaches from behind. When vehicles drive at high speed in narrow lanes they honk continuously which disturbs the residents. More importantly, if any vehicle, be it a car or motorcycle, hit a pedestrian at high speed it may result in serious injury or even death. Safe drive, save life.
