The SpaceX Mars program is a collection of initiatives that the aerospace corporation SpaceX
expects will aid in the colonisation of Mars. The company claims that this is required for the
long-term survival of the human species, and that its Mars program, which includes the
continued construction of the SpaceX Starship, would lower space transportation costs, making
travel to Mars more feasible.
Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX, initially outlined his objective of allowing Mars settlement to
the Mars Society’s board of directors in 2001. SpaceX developed many vehicle designs for
sending payloads and humans to Mars in the 2000s and early 2010s, including space tugs,
heavy-lift launch vehicles, and Red Dragon capsules. The company’s current Mars strategy was
originally publicly suggested in 2016 at the International Astronautical Congress, with the
Interplanetary Transport System, a fully-reusable launch vehicle. Since then, the launch vehicle
idea has been modified and renamed “Starship,” and it has been under development ever since.
The corporation has provided many projections for the first human landing on Mars.
Early voyages to Mars would comprise small fleets of Starship spacecraft supported by
public-private partnerships, according to SpaceX. The business believes that after infrastructure
on Mars is constructed and launch costs are decreased further, settlement may commence.
The proposal has been criticised as unfeasible, both because of funding uncertainties and
because it solely addresses transportation to Mars and not the issue of supporting human life
there.
