Focus on the Mission, with Mike Pompeo

After a “change” election that returned Donald Trump to the presidency, what can Americans expect in the way of foreign policy and national security departures from the current administration?

Former US secretary of state and CIA director Mike Pompeo joins Hoover senior fellows Niall Ferguson, John Cochrane, and H.R. McMaster to discuss possible new directions for America’s national security apparatus. Also discussed: the Biden administration’s allowing Ukraine to fire long-range missiles into Russia; how to counter Chinese threats to Taiwan’s independence; Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s being declared a “war criminal” subject to arrest; plus the likelihood that Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency can reshape the federal government.

Recorded on November 22, 2024.

  1. It took me 20 years to get into the military and they put me in a recruit sustainment program I only had a little bit of time and I used it wisely and we need to put that behind us somehow but I don't know how to stop and moving train

  2. John's assumptions are questionable:
    – NATO would defeat Russia in a week => i don't remember NATO has ever fought an opponent that can blow up Patriot and Abram
    – the Russians in Donbas would welcome NATO troops, if NATO troops were ever able to get there => We have not heard of any opposition, riots in the occupied territory.

  3. Trump needs to sideline people like Pompeo and focus on the America First agenda. End these wars ASAP, no new wars, focus on the border, the economy, and restructuring government. Thats what people voted for.

  4. I guess I've only been seeing pre-2022 pictures of Mike Pompeo in the media, because as soon as this video cut over to his camera I was like "who the hell is that?". Some quick googling revealed that he lost 90 pounds in 2022, and now looks almost unrecognizable from his previous heftier form.

  5. Lots of rich older white guys telling us what we should do… the world is tired of them and their decision-making failures. All these guests are part of the military industrial complex. And the younger generations are sick of them and their worldview.

  6. I keep hearing that our enemies are ten feet tall and are threatening the West all over the globe. Aside from the oxymoron, are we and our intelligence agencies making the same mistake we made immediately prior to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Soviet Union? Are we giving Putin too much credit just because he has nukes? The most common economic comparison I see being made isn't between Russia and the United States, but between Russia and a single one of our states. Are we giving Xi too much credit because . . . ? Why do we credit China with any superpower? Their only power is the ability to preserve the CCP.

  7. I found the podcast informative and lively. I always come away from these Hoover Inst. interviews a little more educated on whatever subject is being covered. Having said that….I was very bothered by the final few minutes of the interview and what it revealed about the guest and all the staff. Not a WORD about giving thanks to GOD himself. Plenty of yaking about how they'll spend time with their families or giving yet another lecture at this or that location. No mention of the God that gives them all the blessings they hope to enjoy in the near future. It was a very unfortunate last minute or two in the podcast…but maybe somewhat revealing? Pretty shameful. I hope just another instance of man thinking himself so smart that God himself doesn't need to enter the conversation….even at the tail end.

  8. Mike "We lied, we cheated, we steal, we stole." Pompeo

He must be extradited to Australia for 'Conspiracy to Mvrder' lead public interest investigator with NYT/Guardian etc, Julian Assange, along with his anti-democratic accomplice Hillary Clinton.
