On August 8, 2024, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman addressed the Rajya Sabha and mentioned that a letter from Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari requesting the removal of the 18% Goods and Services Tax (GST) on health and life insurance premiums was released without permission. This lady is an accomplished liar. She says that tax was levied on insurance premium by State Governments even prior to the introduction of GST (it was called Service Tax). But she cleverly forgets to say that the rates of the tax were much lower during those years. If my data sourced from the internet is correct it was less than 5%. She has almost quadrupled the rate to 18% GST.
