As for why he "Stabbed himself" That was him "Getting control" of the knife by stabbing himself in a place where it wouldn't be lethal, then he broke his arm with the move

John helped Viggo stab himself so he could bring him in close break Viggos arm and get the knife so he could kill Viggo. John's that badass that he willingly takes a stab wound just to kill his enemy lol
